But despite all of this Turnbull outpolls Shorten as preferred leader. I presume it's a trust/honesty factor?

That's too complicated. Trust and honesty always run a distant last when it comes to conflicted emotions stemming from the bondage to parental/peer political bias. Voting tends to be driven by the degree you decide to betray your fear of breaking a voting habit rather than merit.

... I would argue trust as a rare commodity is increasingly valued over entrenched biases of the past. All IMO ;)

And yet the major parties continue to garner high primary vote numbers and the promise of change through protesting voting for minor parties has never eventuated.

You see it right here on this forum, an incapacity of people to think outside dipole politics, the apparent pride in bad policy because of the party delivering, the forgiving of corruption because of the party colour riband, etc etc.

It's ludicrous to think supposedly intelligent people wouldn't actually consider their vote is better than the mandatory choice of two parties, but they don't. They don't know what their party plank is and how far policy has strayed from it's core beliefs. But the same two parties continue to dominate, the polls are always two party preferred and the same old trust of brand name is at its core, not trust of integrity, trust of honesty, trust of prudence, but labels.

Indeed , trust has well and truly been shattered, by such things as "No carbon tax under a government I lead" and "no adverse changes to pensions, Medicare and the ABC".

So while I think Labor is the least worst of the major parties I no longer give them my first preference. That goes to Xenophon where I can or other Independents or minor parties that I think are worthy.

Making pollies pay for lying is the only way to ensure they won't do it again. (much)

And you're not the only one - which probably adds to my claim. Despite the two party's dominance in the area of funding their popularity is being tested, if not eroded by an increasing lack of trust.
Since '96 their collective primary votes are 86% 79%* 82% 84% 85% 81% 79% and last year 77%. (*one nation, never ever GST). Even Keating's disastrous loss was 4% higher than Shorten's last... and he says Labor is back? LOL

I won't vote, because I was always taught, if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything.
Abbott should still be leader of the LNP, the flip to Turnbull has proven a fizzog, and has only helped to promote Hanson.
