TLS - Telstra Corporation

Telstra 1H25 results were well received, and the market cheered the 9.5c ff dividend. Since then, tariff and other shocks have spooked the market; as a domestic defensive, the stock has performed well this year. Today's sell off elsewhere saw only a 1/2 percent drop for TLS

Another 52 week high today. Just noticed that old TLS has been cranking out these new highs for a few months!
A pullback soon looks likely but strong intermediate trend. Getting attention as a 'defensive'?

Small holding
Hold sentiment

Gone past my lighten mark ,,,,,,
....
Holding on for at least the New financial Year.
Finger on the trigger but.
yes .. very tempting to reduce the holding at current levels

my problem is finding a better place ( than TLS , currently ) to park that cash , in the 'add' target range ( for me ) are MGX and KGN

but would i really swap some TLS for either of those

TLS has quietly grown at 25% above my average entry price, and is now the largest holding the SMF.
Have put some offload sales in at 5.10 just in case it keeps on going.
Mick
TLS is up more than $1.20 a share for me , , but still a comparatively small holding in the portfolio ( outside the top 20 )

Not so good for the Mum and Dad investors, who bought in the third float at $7.40 , because the Government was told it sold the first two tranches too cheap.

Thankfully they have been reasonable dividend payers, the MIL bought into the last lot, she still has them (2,000).

As she is now 92, I don't think she will see them break through her buy in price.

bought them between November 2015 ( @ $5.05 ) and May 2018 ( @ $2.70 ) before exiting in November 2021 ( @ $.04 ) and taking a profit from some aggressive 'averaging down '

the last time i bought in @ $3.47 in May 2024 , and still hold those , now 'safe-haven ' maybe , but 'blue-chip' not in my opinion

Yes, i'm not convinced on where they are going to get their growth from, as the competition to the NBN increases.

The more services that can be provided by the low orbit satellite services, the more telstra will just become an onseller and also their greater coverage moat will disappear.

I may well be incorrect in my assumptions, but I got out early on and nearly got back in a few years ago, when they went down to $2.80, but chose the banks for dividend instead.

Technology is moving on very quickly, I still think the TLS/NBN infrastructure will end up just being a cable tv service, business needing secure data link will be the major traffic income.
I can't see that income increasing as the NBN is already making a loss and they wrote off the agreed contribution from the media and telco's, like I said personally i don't see where the growth is going to come from.

With Australia having such a low population and the population being so concentrated, I would think it will suit satellite internet deployment technology as supplying the required bandwidth for traffic shouldn't be as difficult.
Just my thoughts.

Starlink is launching a new generation of satellites, the V3, which will have significantly higher downlink and uplink capacity than previous generations. Each V3 satellite is expected to provide 1 Tbps of downlink and 160 Gbps of uplink, a substantial increase over the V2 Mini satellites. This will allow for greater bandwidth and a higher number of users per satellite, according to CNET.

Amazon, through its Project Kuiper, launched its first 27 Kuiper internet satellites into space on April 28, 2025. This deployment marks the beginning of a large-scale satellite broadband network, aiming to rival SpaceX's Starlink. The satellites were launched from Florida aboard an Atlas V rocket.

there is a reason why my Telco holdings are ( highest $value first ) TUA ( 'free-carried ' ) , TLS and SPK

i doubt the relevant Governments will let TLS or SPK fail ( in my lifetime ) , whereas TUA has solid growth potential

I dont see TLS failing, just don't see how it grows, it is a quasi Govt dept same as Qantas.

The Govt wont let it fail, the ACCC, wont let it grow on competition grounds and new technology will eat its lunch.

As you say it wont fail IMO.

just overheard a very interesting discussion .. i guess TLS will lose one extra customer in the near , if not the ombudsman will become involved in the dispute

it MIGHT be in the process of losing market share , if this is a trend and not an outlier

local gossip in this area is staying Star-link is already picking up the cherries ( as many as they can service if the gossip is correct )
