Veganism

I personally believe, if you arn't willing to look the animal in the eyes before you depart it from this earth, then don't eat it.

I would be prepared to dispatch/harvest an animal if I knew how to do it humanely and safely. I have caught fish and dispatched them.
My grandmother was a farmer's wife and she dispatched the chickens. Her sons and husband dispatched the bigger animals. These days the guys on the farm get a mobile butcher to slaughter their private meat for them. It is not because they are squeamish but the butcher has the equipment to do it better and safer.

Not disputing that, most herbivorous animals are incredibly strong. I work with them every day, I know this for a fact.

However depending on genetics humans can be lipotropic or glycotropic, with attendent ramifications for protein metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism in the individual.

For instance, my wife thrives as a mainly vego , incredibly strong for a woman and very energetic, and does not do very well on a high protein diet at all.

I run like a diesel on a high protein diet, and am as weak as p1ss and up and down like a yo-yo on a vego diet.

I dispatch the chicken rooster and try to mske sure they have a happy life before, the butcher dispatches our grass fed steers and 8 am a back up just in case
They are pets, die happy instantly while munching their treat bucket of food, and maintain my land healthy

.... and, there is no way I'm living without the occasional treat of French cheese :inlove:

I have to admit that I was vego for a number of years for this very reason.

Great for the relatively sedentary lifestyle I had at that particular time, but unsuitable for when practicing my profession.... just don't have the energy or strength as a veg. (and I do know my nutrition/metabolics/exercise physiology).

However there is a woman, a highly functioning autistic and PhD called Temple Grandin, who has single handedly changed this.

Look it up, it is super interesting.

Plenty of vegan atheletes out there Wayne, going vegan won’t stop you doing anything if you are eating enough decent food.

Youtube vegan athletes and you will find heaps of examples.

I have watched heaps of that ladies videos, they do nothing to make me feel ok about it, when you can go and watch current footage of standard rspca approved slaughter where animals are literally screaming for their lives as they are choked to death.

I believe Veganism to be a psychiatric illness and I am not alone.

Professor A. C. Anine MD of the State University of New York at Buffalo, ( SUNY Buffalo ) who is on the committee tasked with updating the DSM V is of the same opinion and has published on it.

She is presently tasked with preparing a revision of all Compulsive Disorders for DSM VI.

The DSM for those unaware is the bible for shrinks to work out what a patient suffers from.

It is difficult if not impossible to treat she says. Her words are " Watchful Waiting ".

As in " Eat yer sprouts " when the kids were young.

At least the doctors will make a quid out of it, but it's not productive wealth, merely redistribution.

I doubt they are pets, not many people would be able to kill their happy healthy pet for the entertainment value of eating its body.

Just to understand my background, I have hunted, and killed goats by cutting their throats and used to spear fish every week end.

Just because you have become desensitized to an act doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do.

I ended up cutting up my spear guns.

Not practical !

I think most of us live in the suburbs or high-density cities. Hence, we don't all live in our own acre block with free range animals running around like the good old days in the villages (like my grandparents who aren't alive today).

So I agree with Ann's comments above, if there is assurance (from the Animal Welfare Authorities / RSPCA etc) that an animal is not tortured to death I am OK with it.

Just eat more protein from plants, plenty of high protein plant based foods.

Eg, peanut butter has more protein than mince meat.

Even the beyond meat has more protein than a regular meat patty.

Most people don’t realize but if you sit down to bowl of spaghetti bolognese, the pasta sauce and pasta has more protein than the mince meat they might add, an

yeah 1g more...and more deaths per spoonful as well. (US Site)100g Jif extra crunchy PB = 594cals Total carbs 25g Total protein 21.9g. Who would/could eat 100g of peanut butter at one sitting!?

OK let's examine this, it is a bit hard as it depends on how much meat you put into the sauce, so let's say the meat is equal weight to the pasta, this would be comparing like with like.

100g uncooked wheat pasta = 348 cals Total Carbs 74.7g Total protein 13g
100g uncooked 93%ff ground beef = 152 cals Total Carbs 0% Total protein 20.9g
1 serving of tomato/basil red sauce 1/2 cup = 45cals Total carbs 8g Total protein 2g

You really need to take a reality check and get your facts straight instead of coming out with so much garbage you lot!

There is the issue of the quality of the protein, and whether your metabolism is glycotropic or lipotropic.

VC, I know my nutrition, especially as it relates to exercise physiology. All the plant protein in the world just doesn't do it for "me", though I fully accept it is great for some others.

I also believe that. I think it's possible to live on (get by) soy-based everything but I will have digestive problems. I can go mostly plant based but benefit from having a balanced diet which includes some meat and fish etc. Maybe we are similar or maybe we are all meant to be like that as omnivores.

I am not one sided in this whole topic so quite happy that it's discussed actually. So far I know what either extreme is not suitable for my digestive system (not sure for others). The reason I know is I've tried both extremes.

1. I've tried going animal product free and although my tummy felt lighter, I was craving for something and no amount of soy based alternatives could suffice. In fact too much soy based stuff made me feel kinda bloated and uncomfortable.

2. I've tried going mostly meat/fish (based on a high protein diet that I was trying out) and I didn't like it. Felt heavy and stuffed after meals and took so much effort to digest it by the body I felt lazy. Constipation was another problem and finally when it finally got expelled it was horrible like a dead carcass ! So I know the diet was not balanced it was discontinued.

So call me old fashioned but these fad diets don't work for me. I actually like the good old fashioned "Balanced Diet".

Now I am happy as Larry. My diet is mostly of fruit/veg (trying to go more organic on these) and complex carbs e.g. wholemeal bread etc with smaller quantities of dairy, poultry and fish and the occasional sweet treat/dissert. Digestive system working in perfect harmony :joyful:

How protein do you think you need?

Two bits pieces of toast with peanut butter on it, and a glass off soy milk is more than you need for breakfast.

As long as you are eating enough calories, from a mix of fruit, veg, nuts and grains, you will be getting enough protein.

Check out these vegan body builders.

Your body doesn’t need meat to survive or thrive.

The only USA weight lifter qualify for the last olympics was actually a vegan.

Ann can ramble of about protein all she likes, but these guys (and millions of others) are proof plant based protein is all you need.

Think about it, the animals people eat to get protein are vegan, look at the biggest and strongest animals in the animal kingdom eg gorillas, elephants, rhino etc etc all vegan.

The protein question is probably the question vegans get asked the most, and it’s probably the silliest question we get asked (although I admit, I used to think protein cane from meat when I was a meat eater too)

I ate meat for the first 36 years of my life, and used to use all the silly arguments Ann has be using against it, I debate strongly against veganism for about 2 years, but eventually realized I was wrong, so I switched.

This should answer the concerns on protein.

I am not actually trying to increase my protein intake. If you read carefully I actually gave up the protein diet as it was horrible to digest and even worse (awful smell) to pass.

It was just comments about what I found to be suitable to me (balanced diet) and my digestive system, similar to what wayneL found.

May is now officially vegan month at ASF.

This is the the third vegan thread this month and was created as a result of my gutting The Business of Vegan thread to get as many of the off-topic posts out of there are possible so it can hopefully remain on-topic.

This thread is for all general discussion of veganism and will become my dumping ground when I have to move vegan posts out of other threads.

So please feel free to discuss any vegan related topics in here: diet, lifestyle, ethical issues, famous vegans, vegan activism, it is all OK in this thread.

Knock yourself out.
