Here's Commsec's list of top10 ASX200 winners and losers for 2020. Differs a little from the Marcus Padley list which jumped the gun weeks ago.
Top 3 are coal stocks, who in the world would have picked it? A real contrarian that's who. We discussed it here at the bottom and noone said WHC has got to be a reasonable buy at these prices while making money, screw the CCP embargo on Australian products. I'm not getting over this.
And off topic who would have thought ARB Corp would be in the worst 10? A real contrarian maybe.

Good morning
WHC 1/4erly report published.
Whitehaven Coal's average price take fell slightly in the December quarter, but it won't stop the group from delivering a massive surge in half-year earnings to $2.6bn, compared to $600m in the prior comparable period.

Average coal prices came in at $527/tonne in the December quarter, compared with A$581/tonne in the September period, which is more than double the $211 per tonne it received in the prior corresponding period. Whitehaven's first-half coal price will be a record $552 per tonne.

The earnings boost comes after December quarter run-of-mine (ROM) production of 4.8 million tonnes, up 21 per cent on the September quarter and 50 per cent more on pcp. Sales rose 16 per cent to 3.4 million tonnes, up 20 per cent on pcp.

At the end of December, Whitehaven held a net cash position $2.5bn. Managing director and chief executive Paul Flynn said the group had maintained strong operational performance at its Narrabri underground mine, which helped offset the impact of continued wet weather on volumes from its open cut mines.

Not holding
Have a very nice day today.

Bahaha, commentators scared many into believing CCP China's punitive embargo on Aust coal would cripple our coal companies. WHC business didn't even register their coercion. WHC sells all around our wider region ex China and that's what all our businesses should be doing to the extent possible, e.g our barley growers should be taIloring business to survive ex China - the most Orwellian evil country on the planet as it's more powerful than North Korea.

I see the NSW government has made a decision to appropriate up to 10% of the coal produced.
Looked for article in Skynews to compare reports but no mention.

Actually I've reviewed a few posts and it looks like wayneL clearly called it and was "dipping a toe in" around the bottom.
I wish I'd mortgaged the house, sold the the defender90, and everything else I didn't need, and gone balls deep on coal.

I'd be rich beyond belief (seven figures) and having festive dinners with friends and family every single night.

I knew it would b the case, but just not enough testosterone to go balls deep.

The fish that got away.

NOT ME , even in hindsight

yes i bought some extra WHC , and a fair bit ( for me ) extra NHC , some additional S32 as well

maybe because i didn't feel the need for all the extra cash

i got some of the fish , just don't need to buy a lake to house them

Whitehaven Coal announced in response to a media article on 18 September 2023 Australian Financial Review newspaper, the Company confirmed it is participating in the sale process initiated by the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) in relation to the Daunia and Blackwater metallurgical coal mines in Qld.

At this point in time the process is ongoing.

i wonder how BHP will handle this divestment , i know some will be desirous of cash ( capital return/special div. )

if WHC bags the price a scrip deal ( similar to the WDS outcome ) would not be unwelcome to me

but let's see who buys the coal assets ( i suspect WES won't buy back into coal assets but what about SOL/NHC although NHC moving the HQ to NSW hints the answer is negative )

0415 GMT - Whitehaven Coal has an array of options available to fund an acquisition of BHP's Daunia and Blackwater metallurgical coal mines, UBS analyst Lachlan Shaw says in a note.
UBS assumes the mines sell for US$3.3 billion, estimating Blackwater alone is worth A$2.5 billion.
The bank also thinks Whitehaven will partner with a customer or trading house that would fund 25% of any bid. "Based on these assumptions, we estimate Whitehaven could potentially fund the acquisition 50-70% cash requiring US$800 million-US$1.3 billion debt (A$1.1 billion-A$1.8 billion) with gearing 18-30% and completion FY25," UBS says. "These assets could lift Whitehaven's revenue share from met coal from less than 20% to 60%." (david.winning@wsj.com; @dwinningWSJ)

Just like you WDS free carried from BHP. So hold both. If WDS hit 39 plus, I will exit. BHP..mmmm..will it hit that 50...maybe in my dream. Dream may come true too.
