Trump 2.0

I always treat medication as use only when really necessary. Its common sense.

No surprises the left wants to jam anything up their nose, arm and rears.
No wonder you lot are all on the spectrum.
Same here. Both Mrs and I, in our 60s are on no pharmaceuticals at all, save for analgesics if really necessary and only sparingly.

Always look to diet and lifestyle if anything is going on and that has always worked.

Like you say, common sense.

Literally read the study. No one cares about tds idiots running out and bleating to score points.

We saw the same stupidity during covid.

Using TDS is cover for defending an idiot 😉

I didn’t read the study as the headline said “may”

The leading professionals in Australia said that there is no proven link.

They also haven’t said people are eating cats and dogs.

Look, if women take paracetamol everyday when pregnant, there would be some risks, like if they drunk 3 glasses of Scotch a day there would be risks, but to say that properly prescribed doses of paracetamol CAUSES autism is not backed up by the science.
There have been several attempts to make paracetamol prescription only, due to the side effects and suicide by overdose, but I have never heard of a link to autism.
The only link to medication while pregnant causing autism, was antibiotics. From memory, but no one has really identified the cause of the rapid increase in autism in children.

On the other hand being in Trumps position, may well give him access to a lot of info that isn't in the public domain and he has a history of not being able to keep quiet, so who knows.

The pharmaceutical companies wouldn't want it announced and autism is the fastest growing demand on the NDIS, something is causing the increase in autism.

Maybe you could post it in a tiktok video:D

The point was to warn people of potential risks. Anyone saying "its fine" is actually encouraging it despite it being a grey area right now.

Any professional that says "ignore it" needs to be fired. Either they are on a payroll or should not be allowed to practice medicine.

There obviously needs to be more studies.

My understanding is that autism is primarily genetic in origin.

These days there are less taboos on autistic people getting married and having children. Could that be a reason? Also the spectrum of autism seems to widening. More cases are being classified as autism when they once would not be.

Lots of factors feeding into this.

One needs to make a distinction between the rapid increase in Autism, and the rapid increase in the diagnoses of Autism.
My daughter is an Occupational Therapist who has spent some 13 years working in paediatric side of her profession.
Kids with disabilities, behavioural issues, FAS you name it.
She told me some years ago that for many of her cases with autism, it was not the child at fault, but the parents.
The kids are difficult to deal with, but not as much as the parents.
The parents are looking for a diagnosis of Autism to take away responsibility for their own poor parenting skills.
the kids ape their dysfunctional parents.
A doctor or other specialist can provide a diagnosis of Autism as much a case of treating the parents with mollification as much as treating the kids.

This was addressed in the WH press conference. There are comparative community differences e.g. the Amish and Cuba (Paracetamol is too expensive so they don't use it). Also sheer numbers going from 1/20000 in 1970s to 1/31 now (I am using the higher numbers quoted). Autism has been recognised as condition since the 1940s.

I am only relaying information.

My opinion from experience is that the media polarises debates (the science) and lobby groups take advantage of that to get attention whereas the discussion amongst those few in the actual fields are far more agreeable and nuanced (scientific debate).

I guessn it was inevitable that the new trump regime would repeat the stupid mistakes of every other regime that precedes it, but we can but live in hope.
The weaponising of the DOJ continues as among others, the DOJ has announced that it is going after the Soros foundation.
This comes after the DOJ indicted James Comey, letitia James, Miles Taylor, Cghris Krebs and a few others.
All of these players opposed Trump at some stage, and some may deserve it.
But it just perpetuates the politicisation process.

I guess there will either be a lumping of corporations that fall in behind Trump in self defence or an uprising against him.

Will be interesting to watch.

Soros has been making money off disruption which he learned from his days as young man working for the Nazis in Hungary.
No one is coming to help Comey from any side of politics.
Letitia James mortgage fraud was discovered by an independent and it is the same sword she wielded against Trump. Same for Adam Schiff and Lisa Cook. The documents are in the public domain.

The number of people the current DOJ is going after is tiny in comparison to Obama and Biden admins.

The real question is, are actual crimes in the cases or are they throwing 100s of manipulated cases at the wall??

is it Accountability or Persecution? I agree it is hard to know for sure but the honest commentators are on board for now...

Im happy for soros to be investigated thoroughly. He and a few others have funded what basically accounts as domestic terrorism.

Indeed . It is worth going into the details of just how corrupt Donald Trump is with his targeting of anyone who ever trued to bring him to justice.

It will be interesting to see what a Grand Jury does with this case. It will be no surprise if the Trump administration cannot even get to the stage of allowing a case to proceed. It is just so obviously paper thin. What will be even more interesting will be how any Judge responds to the situation.

‘For My Enemies, the Law’

by William Kristol

I’m no expert on the history of Peru. But just a little reading suggests that it’s not a place where, in the 1930s, you’d have wanted to take your chances with the legal system.

The Latin American nation was governed back then by an authoritarian strongman, Óscar R. Benavides. He’s perhaps best remembered today for allegedly uttering the pithy aphorism, “For my friends, everything; for my enemies, the law.”

In other words: Ignore or circumvent or bend the law to benefit loyal allies; use the law to go after political opponents. Pardons for friends, prosecutions for enemies.

That’s the kind of legal system our own North American wannabe authoritarian, Donald Trump, admires. It’s the kind of legal system he’s working hard to bring about.

Last Friday, Erik Siebert, a respected career prosecutor and the acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, resigned ahead of being fired by Trump. Siebert and his colleagues had concluded after a lengthy review of the evidence that there were no grounds to do what Trump wished them to do, which was to criminally prosecute James Comey, the former FBI director, for allegedly making materially false statements to Congress.

On Saturday, Trump took to social media to publicize his demand for this prosecution, and that of others he considered enemies. He framed his post as a message to Attorney General Pam Bondi.

On Monday, Trump installed Lindsey Halligan to replace Siebert as acting assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. The 36-year-old Halligan has never prosecuted a case in any court. Even by Trumpian standards, she is radically unqualified for the position to which she was appointed, perhaps the second-most important U.S. attorney post in the country. But she did have one key qualification, the key qualification: She is a total Trump loyalist.

And so, unsurprisingly, MSNBC reported yesterday that Halligan intends to try to get a grand jury to indict Comey. Halligan would have to move quickly; Comey’s last congressional testimony was on September 30, 2020, meaning that the five-year statute of limitations runs out next week.

ABC News then reported that career prosecutors and investigators in the Eastern District of Virginia had previously determined over a months-long investigation that such a case against Comey was too weak to pursue. Indeed, they presented the newly appointed Halligan with a written and detailed memo to that effect. The memo explained that the investigation into the former FBI director had failed to establish probable cause of a crime—meaning that not only would prosecutors be unable to secure a conviction of Comey by proving the claims beyond a reasonable doubt, but that, according to Justice Department guidelines, they ought not even seek to secure an indictment.

But those guidelines were from the pre-Trump era. Halligan reportedly plans to seek an indictment from a grand jury as early as today.

Trump has repeatedly and publicly demanded prosecutors use the criminal justice system to punish his political opponents even as they turn a blind eye on his friends (see, e.g., Homan, Tom). Now his Justice Department is carrying out his wishes.

One additional feature of 1930s Peru may be worth noting at this point. Oscar Benavides called a presidential election in 1936 and lost the vote. But he refused to accept the verdict of the people. Rather, he used his power to stay in office.

¡Qué sorpresa!

Trumps latest brain rave , More and Bigger Tariffs, is going to roil major sections of the US economy as well as US consumers and many US allies.

And of course these tariffs are illegal..

Donald Trump on Thursday announced a new round of punishing tariffs, saying the United States will impose a 100% tariffs on imported branded drugs, 25% tariff on imports of all heavy-duty trucks and 50% tariffs on kitchen cabinets.
The US president also said he would start charging a 50% tariff on bathroom vanities and a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture next week, with all the new duties to take effect from 1 October.

Drug companies warned earlier this year that Americans would suffer the most if Trump decided to impose tariffs on pharmaceuticals.
In 2024, the US imported nearly $233bn in pharmaceutical and medicinal products, according to the Census Bureau. The prospect of prices doubling for some medicines could send shock waves to voters as healthcare expenses, as well as the costs of Medicare and Medicaid, potentially increase.

Frankly, that the US's loss.

Higher prices in the US could lead to lower prices elsewhere as affected companies offload excesses.

Trump is basically shooting the US consumers, and I think they will make him pay for it next election.

Certainly. There will be a near term impact on inflation but that may be obscured with the current Admin efforts to limit negative reporting on inflation figures.

Australian drug companies have been affected by the announcement. Be interesting to see the impact in the next financial quarter.

Other markets may take more product. I suspect the size of the US market and the consequences of loss of market share will still have a major impact on drug companies selling into the country.

It's an increasing horror show, but it's not our horror show fortunately.

Up to the Yanks to sort it out.
