We have a professional army, though. The chances of maiming and death at war is baked into the deal when someone signs up. Those who join would do so because they assess they get plenty out of the deal. Usually the bet pays off well. Very occasionally it does not.
I do agree it's rather different when someone signs up when the nation is under existential threat, knowing they will definitely go into harm's way. Often they're conscripts anyway. The ol' ANZACS were different men; it was a different time, a different Australia.
Realistically putting our troops in harms way requires dire circumstances, unfortunately it hasn't always been the case example is given we have bled and died with or supporting the US in every conflict since WWI all for Trump to ram tariffs down our throats.
Who knows what Trump would do if Australia was threatened guess it would depend on which way the wind was blowing.
