VAS - Vanguard Australian Shares Index ETF

If VAS drops by 40 points (about 36%) I don’t think we’ll be worrying about the stock market as such. For that drop it would have to be a pretty big Black Swan like another Pandemic but with an R0 of 50, or a Global War.
but all of the above are possible , and a few more nasty outcomes as well , it might be a series of black swans , or just consequences of leaving rot fester in the global economy

That is $2.60 above the Covid low in 2020.

Good luck with that.

gg
luck is my super-power

and the VAS i currently hold are the DRP shares from the previous 12 or so years still participating in the DRP

a bit like mould growing in the bottom drawer

Thanks for the tip, could you expand on that.

Sure.

The major fault with ETFs is that they are listed. It's behavioral psychology. If it's listed you will probably look and look again and look then wonder if.... should I get a bit this or some more of that, shift funds here, move funds there.

The original concept of index investing was to invest a set amount in a given period irrespective of market conditions or political considerations. If the market went down by 30% no matter. Your money purchased more units. If it went up by 30%, you purchased fewer units. Rinse and repeat.

I'm in the pension phase, so really am looking for income and a term deposit is maturing soon.
So I'm thinking either VAS or VHY, because term deposit rates I think will fall, therefore dividends or dividends and capital gains are an option.
If there is a major correction, I'm leaning toward VAS, if there isn't I'm leaning toward VHY.

from my experience VHY was the much better ETF if you intend to DRP ( even ignoring the current div. ) , for capital gain VAS was the better one

don't forget to include the franking credits in your calculation

and one i don't hold ( or held in the past ) is ROYL which pays monthly and isn't so reliant of stock prices ( but i want $10 or less for that one )

Had thought I'd enter at $ 85 but what the hell , have to start somewhere , so ....it's go now !
Bought 10 grand worth at $ 93.29 .
My next ETF will have to be something more daring , but this old stager will do for now . Might get more VAS if it gets a lot cheaper .

@mullokintyre

just in case my several posts on this thread this month didn't really count ( to qualify for the yearly comp. AND i was too dumb to tag them at the time )

i hold VAS ( essentially the shares accumulated via the DRP over the previous 12 years )

those 3 monthly divs. sure make a difference when compounded

please note the div. info in the BuySellSignals PDF is probably inaccurate , but the real income has been uninspiring just the same when based on a nearly $100 unit ( you would hope for at least $1 per 3 monthly div. )

Show Less

since VAS is captive to portfolio div. payments which are returned to unit-holders , be mentally prepared for a trend downward of divs and an erosion of franking credits ( returned from the portfolio holdings )

VAS looks like it will mostly hold above $100 in the coming month and ( according to Commsec
) returning 3.4% ( per annum ) ( plus franking ) on the current share price

is the index ( XKO/top 300 ) becoming over-valued

i hold VAS ( essentially the shares accumulated via the DRP over the previous 12 years )

PS that should complete my posts for the comp. in the month of May , please advise if you disagree

@mullokintyre

i note VAS reached a daily high of $107.11 ( and within 30 cents of it's record high )

am not so sure that is a bullish signal given current global tensions

i hold VAS ( essentially the shares accumulated via the DRP over the previous 12 years )

Franking71.3%

according to Bell Direct

update of product PDS ( an extract )

sorry about the messy layout , but the full PDS is probably too big to attach

@mullokintyre / @peter2

an update for my VAS pick in the 2025 yearly comp.

am only up $6.06 since the start of the yearly comp.

since the ASX is flirting with record highs .. and divs not exactly jaw-dropping how over-valued in the XJO/XKO ?

i hold VAS

@mullokintyre / @peter2

an update for my VAS pick in the 2025 yearly comp.

still hovering around record highs ( just like the XJO currently ) the record high for VAS is $112.50

while ( unrealized ) capital gains are tempting , they can change quickly

be careful there isn't more pressure on div. payouts and franking credits in the near/mid term

i hold VAS ( essentially the shares accumulated via the DRP over the previous 12 years )
