Indeed, watching QT there appears to be a large number of quite young females asking Dorothy Dixers written for them.

One wonders about their qualifications to form or understand complex policy, rather than just being rubber stamps.
They're just getting airtime to build their profiles. Many of them won't keep their seats next time.

Sourcing funds from wherever they can.

I heard that there is a backlog of about 40,000 outstanding "partner" visas, ie people who want to import a partner from overseas

Makes you wonder if there is some sort of industry going on.

Most definitely there is. That partner gets in and then the flood gates are open to allow more of the relies in .
Wash and repeat many times over.

How many from Indonesia and Thailand? I've always wanted to know where all the SE Asian women from classifieds section in Perth come from... Doubtful they came in under the skilled sex worker visa.

Most guys bring in their overseas s-toy, dump them and the immigration department does nothing to ensure they leave the country.

Maybe make these Aussie mine tradies pay a 50k bond when they come in?

Or there's a social problem that's seen a substantial number of Australians simply give up on dating locals because it's all too hard?

I know a few who met someone overseas, imported them to Australia and all of them have remained married. :2twocents

Maybe one or two thousand a year may be expected, but 40k if that figure is correct seems more than casual encounters.

I wonder if there's a chart for that - as in how it's changed over time? The mail order bride stigma was real when I was younger, but it seems the ability of some guys here to go and get a usually considerably younger bride with more traditional values overseas is no longer viewed as "sketch", and often seen as preferable to the slim (irony!) pickings locally.

I know a couple of blokes who have married somewhat younger ladies from other parts of the world (Asia).
When I last asked the question as to why,
Firstly and most appropriate for these blokes was that the "love of their lives" was exactly that.
These ladies looked after them well, great cooks, great housewives and great (you guessed it).
Now the next generation has sprung forth and they couldn't be happier.
Who knows what these kids will offer the country in 15-20 years time.
Masters of a political realm, brilliant medicos, the sky is the limit, because their mothers know that.

Processing of partner visas are apparently "demand driven", ie anyone who asks for one gets one.

Such open ended schemes are ripe for rorting, and while we don't want to exclude genuine relationships, sorting out the wheat from the chaff would be difficult.

Maybe a delay of a few years would be appropriate. Visitor visas might apply in the meantime.

In time or housing shortages and infrastructure stress it seems to me that we should be giving priority to those who can solve the problems, not add to them

The other side of the equation may be, in 30 years time, there wont be the demand to come here.
