Trump 2.0

Taking the politically argument / tribal / cult whatever positions out of it the massive funding of ICE, ICE running around masked up etc is unprecedented in US history and unnecessary. Add the behaviour of the DOJ aggressive language aimed at the judiciary, threatening language towards criticism (media / law firms) I am genuinely surprised at the acceptance from the conservatives here on the forum.
These are all massive threats to democracy/ free speech/ rule of law and yet silence.

You are chasing rabbits down their holes. What happens to US democracy and its political system does not affect Australia's democracy and political system.

My question was and is "I wonder how those frothing from the mouth about Trump's policies are going to react to the Australian government? " Anthony Albanese takes strong stand on anti-Semitism ‘but attacks must stop’ The Segal plan would strip funding from universities and arts festivals that fail to stop anti-Semitism, train border force officials how to screen anti-Semites trying to enter Australia, and implement a nationwide definition of anti-Jewish hate in all level of governments and public institutions.

The USA have a strong democracy, protected by the constitution, laws and courts. But here we have Australian citizens screaming about what happens in the US, while quietly looking the other way when a left leaning government is prepared to copy, I'm not bothered by what happens in the US or what our government is about to do on this current university subject, but I do think what some say on this thread is can be construed as hypocrites, and I can't stay silent on that.

How will Harvard and other universities survive Trump’s funding cuts? Harvard is suing the Trump administration over federal funding cuts that it says put critical research at risk.

Trump administration is targeting institutions where students participated in pro-Palestine protests last year, alleging that the student protesters spread anti-Semitic sentiment on campus.

What happens in the US often comes here example is the language used in Australia is more US than ever and your quote is perhaps a prime example.
That’s before you get into the effects of any chaos in the US markets effects the entire world which we have seen repeatedly.
The every day lunacy created by random tweets from Trump and his administration directly affects Australia.
Due to Trump we don’t know day to day if we have a AURKUS agreement, any alliance at all , what export penalty’s we face, or even if any agreements made will be honoured as none have been so far.
Again I don’t understand the silence.

A word of advice, stop reading too much into the headline news, most of it is sensationalism and the rest is a tool for politicians. Case in point is AUKUS; ABC radio had an expert on and asked all the questions that should be asked and at the end the answer was that regardless of what the Trump camp says AUKUS will go ahead.

Rabit holes are deep and dark.

The only quick path to a socialist state and the permanent incumbency of the insane and criminal Democrat Party.

Yeah.. J had an ongoing discussion with John Dee earlier on around this topic. Historically I have had a general respect for his posts/experiences . However I finally hit a brick wall when he announced with calm certainty that the US cannot become an Authoritation/fascist State because of the strength of its Laws, Constitution and Judical system.

End of story.

Ignore what is happening to Laws, The Constitution and the Judiciary. Ignore the outcomes of the systematic attacks on the Media, Education systems, Science organisations and Judiciary. Nope. The invokement of the Holy words "Laws, Constitution and Judiciary" is sufficient to ensure a stable, democratic, rational society. Scary.

Understanding what is happening
I came across this excellent analysis by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Dietrich was a German Philosopher/ Theologian who was executed by the Nazis in 1945.

This is the snap shot. The rest of the video explores

Gee next you'll be calling us nazis and Donald Hitler.
Bonhoeffer was never part of the mob - and you claim him?

I really don't understand the silence, maybe people think there is a grand master plan (there isnt) or as John Mauldin long time Republican / Trump supporter says he hopes Trump gets lucky but at least's acknowledges the bleeding obvious economically its a train wreak.

I don't understand the silence where ICE is going to get more funding than the FBI, US marines. All that to round up so called cat and dog eaters / criminals / illegal immigrates.
This is an organization that wont identify themselves, mask wearing paramilitary where are the freedom fighters, patriots of free speech etc?
What's disturbing is illegal immigrants and immigrants per say in the US have much lower crime rates than the general population.
No disagreement about deporting criminals or illegals through due process but that is not happening.

This is the mentality Australia has to deal with I think AUKUS is dead. The US has to build 2 subs a year to meet supply of their own production requirements and Australia's they cannot build 1.5 a year plus there are rumors Trump will only agree if Australia is locked in to deploy the Subs for any US requirements.

Note Albanese change of language regarding Australia's independence and sovereignty.

Cult cheers on.

when the next president is elected we will visit this post and this thread with your comments of democracy’s demise and see what your predictions amount to.

And there lies the problem, if Trumps behavior and actions (a new low) become acceptable the bar lowered it can only get worse come the next administration no mattery the party.

So where Epstein files and “client list”.

A US lawyer claiming he has see it and knows the names....

Well worth repeating.

The legalised behaviour of ICE is the definition of an undemocratic system in practice. In what world do we have to wait and see if democracy is being destroyed ?

What's wrong with ICE getting more funding than the marines? (they are not - Karens Facebook TDS cult is wrong) "Marines get more funding than ICE, fueling debates on Trumps military obsession over domestic safety" if that headline came from Fox News or MSNBC people would be screaming and shouting against marines getting $$$.

Why do marines need more funding?
What do marines do all day?
What wars are they fighting?
Ice actively do work - each and every day.
The US has (probably) the most illegal immigrants in the world.

You are right - we shouldn't be silent - we should be demanding ICE gets more funding.

MAGA or Tucker ratcheting up the pressure regarding Epstein being a foreign agent for Israel running black mail.....

undeniably implausible?

Addressing the conservative conference, Carlson said that the real question that needed to be asked about Epstein was not “was Jeffrey Epstein a weirdo who was abusing girls?” but rather, “why was he doing this, on whose behalf, and where was the money coming from?”

“And I think the real answer is Jeffrey Epstein was working on behalf of intel services , probably not American,” he said. “And we have every right to ask ‘on whose behalf was he working?'”

He questioned how Epstein could have gone from being a math teacher without a degree to “having multiple airplanes, a private island, and the largest residential house in Manhattan?”

“Where did all the money come from?” Carlson asked a silent crowd.

He's a dirty ex-teacher kiddy fiddler with a background in NY finance. Nothing surprising here. Does the 'client list' even matter? Who cares who is on it? I assume all these elites are pretty much on it - if they're not at Epstein Island, they're at Diddy Freak offs. And if Epstein is a Israeli spy - who cares? He needs to go back to his kneepad under Putin's desk. Glad fox dumped him. But I would agree there probably is a list with probably mates of Joe, Clinton, and Trump. They all ran in the same circles.

Everyone is sticking the boots in even "The Australian" Paul Kelly.

Trump the tariff man returns – along with the threats and chaos

The Coalition can’t blame the PM for the strategic havoc being wrought.

The lure of success makes Donald Trump only more dangerous – to the world, to America’s real interest, to the international order and, of course, to Australia.

And there lies the problem, if Trumps behavior and actions (a new low) become acceptable the bar lowered it can only get worse come the next administration no mattery the party.

Like I said, it will be interesting to see how your predictions of the demise of democracy plays out when the next US President is elected. I have bookmarked your posts to compare when the time comes.

I received an email from the academic and entrepreneur Scott Galloway, which mirrors your comments almost to the word. I presume he is your source. Writing about the US problem, he is calling for people to support him to change the US system. Nothing he says is about the failure of democracy across the globe as you try to fearmonger us.

"Democracy doesn’t defend itself. We won’t fight this with hashtags, but with votes, lawsuits, and courage. This is the moment we decide: Are we citizens of a republic, or spectators to its collapse? " Scott Galloway

And his recommendation for people like you that support him - "This is the time to go home and fight for America. To Make America, America Again.” Scott Galloway

President Trump is no longer fighting inflation, China, or AI. Instead, he’s declared war on a manufactured threat: the “enemy within” — immigrants, journalists, and professors. Our biggest threat, apparently, isn’t Russian aggression or economic inequality; it’s your Uber driver or anthropology professor. This is not only cruel (and depraved) but stupid, as the chill being cast across the agriculture, services, and construction sectors will likely be more inflationary than the tariffs (more stupidity). Trump’s goal is to deport 4 million undocumented people over four years — that’s about 3% of the U.S. workforce; 10% to 15% in several sectors dependent on immigrant labor.
The “Big, Beautiful Bill” signed into law on July 4 isn’t about border security. It’s a blueprint for mass detention and deportation, a $75 billion hammer in search of a scapegoat. Under the law, ICE gets funding that rivals the military budgets of Italy or Israel to build sites like the facility in the Everglades nicknamed Alligator Alcatraz. The goal? Fear.
This isn’t law enforcement. It’s authoritarian cosplay designed to scare the electorate and silence dissent. Trump’s war doesn’t punish behavior but identity, as immigrants from certain countries and ethnicities are targeted. Federal agents in full tactical gear swept through a park in Latino-heavy L.A. this week, just to make a point. The mayor said: “It’s the way a city looks before a coup.” Q. What do storm troopers, the KKK, and ICE have in common? A mask.
unnamed.jpg

Modern-Day Gestapo

ICE has become Trump’s personal Praetorian Guard. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Vice President Harris’s running mate, was excoriated for comparing ICE to the gestapo. But spare us the bull**** indignation: Masked agents in fatigues raiding churches and schools separating families is not modern America but 1930s Europe. Or is it?
In the 2026 fiscal year, ICE will receive over $11 billion, a 10% increase from current funding. The new law will more than double that. It authorizes the hiring of 10,000 agents, bringing ICE’s force to nearly 30,000. In 1944, Nazi Germany had 32,000 gestapo officers and $2b (inflation adjusted) in funding. They were fighting a world war. Trump is fighting home health aides and Uber drivers.

Criminals? Not Really

ICE claims it’s targeting “the worst of the worst.” But fewer than one-third of the record 59,000 immigrant detainees have been convicted of any crime. The rest? A: Immigrants who didn’t look like the typical Iowa voter.
unnamed.jpg
Trump’s reach even extends to his political rivals. He publicly questioned the citizenship of NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and his former First Friend (Elon). Mamdani has been a U.S. citizen since 2018. Doesn’t matter. “Criminal” now also means “not for Trump.”

Jobs and Lies

The argument that immigrants are stealing jobs is a lie told by people who’ve never built a business or managed a P&L. Immigrants create jobs. They work jobs native-born Americans won’t touch. They pay into Social Security but rarely collect. Deporting them is an economic own goal. The Cato Institute estimates the cost of mass deportations could eventually exceed $1 trillion. The Peterson Institute projects a 1.2% drop in GDP if 1.3 million people are deported, growing to 7% if deportations hit 8 million. That’s not policy, but (see above) stupidity: hurting others while hurting yourself.
unnamed.jpg

The Real Invasion: AI

Instead of militarizing immigration enforcement, we should be investing against the real challenge: AI. The World Economic Forum says 9 million jobs globally may be displaced in the next five years. Anthropic’s CEO warns AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs. Imagine the population of Greece storming the shores of America and taking jobs (even jobs Americans actually want), as they’re willing to work 24/7 for free. You’ve already met them. Their names are GPT, Claude, and Gemini.
Want to protect American workers? Train, don’t terrorize.

Media and Academia in the Crosshairs

Trump’s war on domestic enemies doesn’t stop with ICE. He’s coming for the press and the academy. Disney, Meta, and Paramount have all settled nuisance lawsuits with Trump, for a combined total of about $60 million. All the funds go to his presidential library — where truth will go to be laundered, not learned. Newsrooms are folding or playing defense. Breaking with a long-standing tradition, the White House is handpicking press pool participants.
Harvard, once America’s aircraft carrier strike force of soft power, is now a MAGA speed bag. Autocrats always come for universities, which train people to ask questions. The White House is threatening to defund billions in research, choke off international student visas, and criminalize campus dissent. Nearly 300 top researchers have applied for “scientific asylum” — in France. In the thirties and forties, some of the world’s premier academics fled Europe for America. They brought quantum theory, chemotherapy, modern computing, and other breakthroughs with them. Oh, including the bomb. The rivers of elite human capital are now flowing in reverse, and we’re sending the scholars back. How can we be this ******* stupid?

Warriors vs. Whiners

This isn’t a slippery slope, but a vertical drop. Trump has Congress kneeling, courts folding, and corporations cashing in. What’s left is us. This was never just about immigrants, professors, or journalists. It’s about unchecked power that, unchallenged, is metastasizing.
Democracy doesn’t defend itself. We won’t fight this with hashtags, but with votes, lawsuits, and courage. This is the moment we decide: Are we citizens of a republic, or spectators to its collapse?
Life is so rich,
