VBTC - VanEck Bitcoin ETF

Thanks @Dona Ferentes @Sean K @farmerge and @qldfrog . Forgive me for not quoting your recent posts on $VBTC and thanks for the remarks which help me put $VBTC in to context and which I've taken on board.

  • VBTC is traded on the ASX for 8 hours, five days a week, the 8 hours in which changes in BTC is least likely to happen, i.e. when the good people of the northern hemisphere are sleeping.
  • Aside from trading bitcoin it is the only way for me to have exposure to btc given my perception of risk. I would not trade bitcoin directly, yes, it could all go to crap or to the moon. Not my area of comfort I'm afraid.
  • VBTC is a bet on a bet, after the fact and before the the results are in and the prize pool i.e. value of BTC is known the next day.
  • BTC is I would agree a load of bollox but the perception of BTC is not. Fantasy or not, billions of dollars are bet every day on it's value and it in turn affects other assets all the way from stocks to the mortgage rate on an overvalued home in Bentleigh. The effect may not be large nor immediate but it is in the mix now as a tradeable asset. It cannot be ignored.
  • The question arises, should one invest in it, will it increase in value or go to nothing. Similar to a house in Bentleigh although the time and degree of change in value may be different.
  • My view of BTC is that it is an opportune short term bet e.g buy low in a trading range and sell towards the top of that range, as is happening now. It is a risky bet though.
I've written this as much to assist me in some decisions as to add information to what you have already written. I don't presently hold $VBTC but have in the past.

Crazy times.

VanEck has reduced the fee on its bitcoin exchange-traded fund to 0.45 per cent a year, matching the fee charged by BetaShares for its new bitcoin ETF that launched on Thursday.

VanEck was the first to launch a bitcoin ETF on the ASX, and the fund is now approaching $250 million in assets.

One of my picks for the CY2025 comp. Not a good month with volatility in the US market resulting in a 20% drop. Maybe holders are realising that bitcoin has no real value or use, but as GG says in previous post - "

Many holders are waiting for Trump to do something to make bitcoin value increase, but as seen the last few weeks, Trump only cares about Trump, not even the US gets a look in so be prepared for volitility. Would not surprise me if Trump comes up with a US crypto of some description which makes all the existing cryptos useless and worthless, but he makes a lot of money personally.

One of my picks for the cy25 comp. Bitcoun seems to be following the share market cycle and is down this month with the tariff turmoil. Expect a turn around after the turmoil settles

I've done some calculations on the conversion between Bitcoin itself, and VBTC the Van Eck ETF both quoted in $AUD.

I took the close of trade for both to be 4pm today AEST.

So ... 1 Bitcoin is 4900 VBTC. Close enough to 5000 for an honours Mathematician obtained by pure memorisation and not understanding one iota that I wrote.

I may as well post a chart, a one year of VBTC. Closing price today $33.70

One of my picks for the CY25 comp, and going well being up nearly 12% for the month. I do have a small holding which I might sell out of soon to lock in some profit.

I did a comparison in performance between BTC Bitcoin in $USD and VBTC in $AUD via the percentage gain in both from the low in April and 4pm price yesterday afternoon.

  • BTC the gain was 40% give or take some fractions of a percentage.
  • VBTC the gain was 30% again give or take some fractions of a percentage.
I believe this provides good value for me having my interest in bitcoin in an ETF in $AUD which is monitored by the ASX rather than go to the bother and attendant dangers of opening a bitcoin account.

It may seem like a large difference but then the charts appear fairly similar over that time period. The internal costs of an ETF and changes in the $AUD/USD rate may account for some of the difference in return.

just ignore the highlighted price on the R side of the BTC chart, it is from a few minutes ago, not from yesterday at 4pm.

I'm happy to continue holding VBTC as an exposure to BTC.

One of my tips for the CY 2025 stock tipping comp. Bit coin reatively flat this month which is not too bad after a sell off when USA attacked Iran's nuclear sites. Bit coin did recover quickly and looks to be in an uptrend again.

Bitcoin is on a bit of a tear today, an outfit in Tokyo has increased their holdings considerably, adding some hundreds of BTC to it's hoard and this has been noticed by numerous millionaires in sweaty basements and the bulls are running.

VBTC has mirrored that. Overall it is up 10% in one week. Which is good for holders.

One of my picks for the CY 25 stock tipping comp. Bitcoin up about 11% this month. With Trump putting in legislation for stable coin in US dollars, helps other crypto currencies to become more recognised. GG also noted some Japanese buyers which is all positve for bitcoin

VBTC continues to follow the price of BTC upwards.

A safe(r) way to invest in BTC from Australia without losing your cojones to a granny in Romania.
