Just read news.com.au and you will regularly see such clangers. Proofreaders are apparently no longer a thing. When ya reading some serious article and they use those two unforgivable words: "try and", instead of the correct "try to"...And then I have to justify to myself, "hey, they're not really that dumb, maybe they're just being casual - like someone starting a sentence with 'and'".
A similar-ish one was while watching ABC News and the DEI-hire reporter actually ended her sentence with "and that". I hadn't been watching TV for a long time and was almost crying with laughter.
The one that gets right up my left nostrel is the use of the 1950'd beatnik talk, "like".Just read news.com.au and you will regularly see such clangers. Proofreaders are apparently no longer a thing.
I myself am a regular linguistic transgressor, but my excuse is that I failed English and only fell in love with the language in later life.
However, it is supposed that having a degree in journalism would presuppose either a degree in English, or at least some units in the same.
Let's be honest, Australia is nailing it.
Positive thinking at its best!!!!
