What a dreadful occurence. Two police officers dead, one seriously injured. Suspect is on the run with weapons, his wife and two children. Reports are that he is a "nutter" with Sovereign Citizen views.

I have some sympathy with the basic premise of SC, Magna Carta and all that. In practice it is never going to work, none of us can opt out of the social contract as defined by... the govt, in peaceful rebellion or not... not truly possible unless you live in a cave far away from civilization and let the cards fall as they may. SCs will always have to enter into the social contract at some level.

Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's etc.

And as we've seen on several occasions now, it can lead to extremism, as we have seen now several times.
 
Some crimes are worse than others but deliberate murder of people doing their jobs is one of the worst imo.

I did hear in the news that the officers were attempting to execute a search warrant for historic sex offences. More will be revealed no doubt.
 
Apparently armed to the teeth and then TV news came out with he has his wife and children as hostages.
No doubt the police will have a few sharp shooters ready.

The shooters family apparently attended a police station and are therefore safe.

I predict that the gunman probably won't be taken alive.

Wasn't aware that the family are now safe.
Hopefully the sharp shooters get their chance.
 
Not to take anything away from this situation, or to diminish it in any way, but Dezi Freeman's purported best mate says he is not a "Sovereign Citizen". Interesting comments FWIW

Sounds like more religious lunatics like the ones who shot police in Queensland.

He is not a religous nut.
He is a right wing conspiracy extremist known for previous behaviour. Completely gone down the rabbit hole.

Freeman, who was born Desmond Christopher Filby, is a self-described “sovereign citizen” and since the COVID-19 pandemic had developed a public profile within the radicalised anti-government community for his stunts.
His intense hatred for police is well documented in online posts, video footage and court documents. During a hearing last year appealing his suspended driver’s licence, Freeman told a court that “even the sight of a cop or a cop car … it’s like an Auschwitz survivor seeing a Nazi soldier”.

Locals said on Tuesday that during the coronavirus pandemic his behaviour became increasingly erratic. He had refused to wear face masks in shops, voiced his refusal to get vaccinated, and told people about his distaste for government restrictions and lockdowns.
“He was anti everything to do with it,” one local said. “He went from being just a pretty ordinary country bloke … a normal dude you’d see at the local footy club all the time to quite a strange bloke. He fell down a bit of a rabbit hole and sort of disappeared and went off the radar.

During the lockdown years, Freeman appeared on podcast episodes discussing his attempt to “arrest a magistrate”, and made headlines in 2021 when he helped lead an attempted private prosecution of then premier Daniel Andrews for treason.
Freeman was arrested outside court in Myrtleford while protesting with fellow fringe anti-government demonstrators on the day the charges he filed against Andrews were due to be heard. The magistrate threw out the Andrews case.

Possibly. But thou shalt not murder and all that, so who knows?

One thing for sure is that there is more to this than meets the eye, and the narrative managing. Could equally be mental health issues. Either way it's not going to end well for Freeman.
 
Definitely mental health issues are involved. However the quantity of legislation affecting ordinary people continues to increase because politicians think that is what they are there for, so maybe there needs to be some review of what laws are actually necessary and what laws overly intrude on personal freedom.

Above all, sympathies to the families of the deceased and wounded officers.

Next thing there'll be thousands marching on the steps of the Opera House, waving the flag of terrorism, or across the Harbour Bridge. ..Oh wait, that space is already taken. .Those ones aren't extremists at all

That’s how it works in Australia.

Yes, just doing their jobs. Please, all support to the families.

I hope they hunt down this offender, and hold him to account. Not overly fussy about the methods.
 
People die everywhere in tragic situations save the fake sympathy.
I know what the judicial system is like down in that shthole Victoria.
 
Everyone, you me and all and sundry have the absolute right to be able to go work and go about the daily tasks then when that shift is finished being able to go home to one's family
These two police officers' families do not now have that to see their husbands or fathers come through the front door again..
