Re: School - 1977 vs 2007?

Yes, ahh the good ol' days - where hitting children was allowed!

Those that grew up in the days of physical punishment, what did they do? They rebelled. Fear of authority, & fear of punishment for a mistake does not teach anything; it merely insights fear.

Should a child be taught that a mistake must be punished? No, a mistake should be corrected, but never punished ...

Grow up to be healthy businessmen? Meh, seem to be a lot of 30-40-year old people that aren't exactly balanced ... :p:

Sorry, but I guess I thought this was all rubbish?
I understand that it's in humor, but it just seems very juvenile

What, in the 70s they didn't have whiners? Everyone was just tough, & perfect? Funny how some only remember the positives of their era (and only the negatives of the current) ... I'm sure many young girls who failed studies claimed it was because of an oppressed women's society back then as well

Yes, but that fear doesn't simply melt away into adulthood - especially with the baby-boomers; who don't like to give up their places in the world :p:. It leads to a shattered self-esteem, a fear of authority (which in turn leads to rebellion, & criminal behaviour), & has minimal benefit.

The major issue with child-punishment, is that there is no way to regulate it. How do the authorities know, if a child is whacked for say, breaking a vase - as opposed to being hit because he has a monster of a father (or mother) who hits them for anything, & is taking it out on them after their stressful day at work?

Basically, who gets to draw the line? Is it OK to hit over a broken cup? What about spilt milk? What about because the child is crying over a lost pet? And of course, what if the child is (after-punishment) found "innocent" of the accused act? (Applies in schools as well; teachers do make mistakes) "Oh, sorry for beating you son! I really thought you stole the money" - It's best just to outlaw it all.

A few young punks out there is a fair price to pay imo to prevent even a few more children from growing up with such misplaced fear.

& Once more, I'm sure there were people similar to that of this Corey chap back then as well ... even in the know-all age of parenting that was the 70s

I can recall being hit on the knuckles in Year 6, a few years before 1977 though! Yeah, bring on the good ole days where teachers thought it was OK to hit girls! :(

I'm happy with whaling, logging, paper mills.and I don't like kangaroos ( in their present numbers) or fruit bats BUT I did vote labor for the first time. Am I in danger of losing my red neck status?
