Have to disagree here, it has everything to do with education.
the only education these poor bugg rs do receive is religion. Which is "belief" as in fairy tales and a far cry from any informed education.
Education and empathy are very important, but culture has a bit to do with it too I think. And it doesn't necessarily mean a culture is sub human, just a different culture within the species. Some cultures may be less developed perhaps.Lack of education does not prevent empathy, if you can do that to a young girl or treat an animal so badly it screams (Indonesia) withut feeling anything you are sub human.

That's being pretty generous.Sub human could be a bit emotive, perhaps the definition of human could include attitudes that exclude empathy.
This goes to Explod's point about education. Any creature which has a nervous system feels pain, very much including all animals. Some cultures dont believe animals feel pain

A GROUP of 15 religious brothers led by an "alpha paedophile" is suspected of the unreported deaths of two boys and the sexual abuse of more than 40 others.
The victims – abused over three decades – include wards of the state cared for by the brothers in homes for the mentally impaired, a state parliamentary inquiry into child abuse is expected to be told. Seven are believed to have committed suicide.

''They speak of being given a red medicine that made them drowsy. Pack rapes took place and boys who resisted or attempted to fight off their attackers were beaten mercilessly. These were boys of seven to 15 years up against adult males,'' he said.
Dr Chamley said the alleged paedophiles would become hyperactive after taking the boys to football matches.
''At the football matches the boys were provided with beer and encouraged to drink with the accompanying brothers,'' he said.
''After these occasions the paedophiles would become hyperactive and overt. The evening meal was followed by buggery and pack rapes and the remainder of Saturday night spent by many boys crying and in fear. And then Mass on Sunday morning.''

Male terrorist dons Burka to escape Indonesian jail
A five-year old Saudi girl has died after she was tortured by her father, described as a “prominent” religious scholar who often preaches on numerous satellite television channels.
Lamaa breathed her last in an intensive care unit of a hospital in the Saudi capital Riyadh a few days ago after weeks of suffering from broken arms, skull fracture and head bruises, her mother told Al Arabiya.
“He used all sorts of torture and abuse against Lamaa,” said the girl’s mother, now divorced from her brutal husband.
The singular problem with religion is that it claims we are not another animal. It tries to raise us above the other critters, with very good historical reason, which has been well covered. If religious folk can accept just one thing: that we created God in our own image, then we'd see some sanity prevail.Ramadan Reminder Day 16 - Islam vs Evolution - Yasir Qadhi | August 2012

+1. It is so overdue. Hopefully some of the perpetrators are now beginning to feel some of the terror they inspired in their victims. This Royal Commission is going to be very, very untidy, imo. Necessary, but untidy. Going to embarrass the nation I think. Probably well deserved. Going to open a can of worms. Will probably cost significant positions of authority, and reputations. Sounds like it could be very wide ranging (in order too appease the Catholics) which means we may not get a report for years. Let's hope the TOR is tight, so it gets actioned in a timely fashion. Not sure if the general public will think it's good or bad for us to be in the international frame on this one. I think good. Someone taking action!
