Interactive Brokers

I have an account with IB for Australian and US share trading. I also have an account with CommSec for Australian Shares and with US broker Ameritrade for US shares. I keep these accounts purely to get free real time level II (market depth) data.

I would like to close my Ameritrade account to simplify my affairs and transfer the US shares to IB. But once my portfolio drops under USD100K with Ameritrade, I lose access to realtime level II (market depth) information and would have to pay for that facility. As far as I can tell, IB also charges a considerable amount for real time market data. I am not interested in research data, just real time quotes and level II (for US shares). Is anyone aware of some free (or very low cost) service to get this real time data.

After my pc decided to crap itself two weeks ago, ive bought a new one and now installing all my stuff.

IB TWS has installed a new version and ive lost all my settings wich is anoying.

Ive found a pic of tech/a TWS, which is i think the older version witch is how I want it and in the order top and bottom too, pic here:

Sorry to interrupt folks, but i have a question regarding TWS that i was hoping some of the systematic traders here may be able to help me with:

I have a DAX Strategy that uses a set time to exit the market just before the close. This strategy trades on NT while i am asleep, and if i want to trade it live a would feel more comfortable if i could setup TWS to flatten everything just before the close. I could use Lock and Exit configure to shut down TWS after the exit time on NT, and if it could flatten everything then i would not risk holding overnight. So basically i want a backup in TWS in case TWS looses its connection...I can't find this option anywhere and i am wondering if anyone has come across this before? I am using TWS 921.

Cheers,

CanOz
PS - Long Time No SEE!

I *think* you'll have to write some code to do that. I don't think there's a simple automated equivalent of clicking on "trade->close all positions" in TWS.

There is a simple reqGlobalCancel in the API that will cancel all open orders, but I think to close out filled positions, you need to write code that queries your portfolio and submits orders accordingly.

Actually, couldn't you just set the GoodAfterTime to your exit time, and submit a MKT order whenever you want?

Sorry Punta, i don't think i follow you....? Ahh, just found it...and i don't think i can make that work...I guess i'll just have to figure out an audio alert thats really annoying if IB TWS disconnects from NT.

I try and save my TWS settings every once in a while on a file on my trading PC called TWS Settings...I've been down your road before...

Hi a quick question.

What is the best way to learn how to use tws? mainly for futures. i have downloaded the tws guide. what about videos? tutorials etc?

thanks for your help

Cheers

Just get cranking with a paper trading account.

Watch the IB webinars as well....

I didn't receive a single response to my questions a few months ago. Does that mean that there are no such features available in IB? That no-one else trades opening/closing auctions in a similar manner? That perhaps you didn't understand what I was looking for? I'd love some response, but perhaps this is just out of the ball park of most traders.

So if there is someone else that looks at the auction opening price, or indicative auction price, or calculated opening price, or whatever it might be called on your platform, (but especially if you're also using IB), I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,
Brenton.

RE: Learning TWS

Yeah, i agree. Fire up the paper trading account and just go crazy setting up pages and charts....try out all the tool. Check out the help guide and the tutorials.

Its logic is a bit strange at times, being java based....but at the end of the day it decent enough for a broker platform.

As i said before, once you get your workspace set the way you like it, save the settings on your PC as well so you'll have them in case you need them.

My TWS just takes orders from either NinjaTrader, or Multicharts now....:

Couldn't you send a OCO linked MOC (Market On Close) order with all position. If you have a target order OCO it to the MOC order. That way if the target hasn't been hit before close your MOC order will trigger closing the position and cancelling your target and stop order.

I'm not using a target, only a moc order that stays in nt, in other words...nt generates a sell at market order just before the close at a set time...so I'm going to have to change the code so that instead of holding the order in nt until the close, it sends a moc order right after it takes the long position it the market. That way, no matter what happens to my connection, my exit before the close will still be executed.

Yeah?

I guess that will do it. Only one way to know for sure..... and it will not involve this

Yeah, I need to wait until about 2 pm est to see if it takes the trade, then it's another 2 hours before the exit....

Hi folks,

First-time poster, long-time trader (sounds a bit like an AA meeting intro...).

I'm about to sign-up for IB, and I've got a couple of questions that I'm struggling to find answers for:
1) As a US broker, what happens to an Australian individual's holdings if IB goes bust? Has anyone found any policies relating to this?
2) I've received a couple of different responses from IB regarding the ability to pre-pay interest on a margin loan a year in advance. Has anyone actually done it?

I have trawled through the posts for a couple of hours and haven't found anything relating to these questions, but apologies if they have been discussed already and I missed them. Hope to hear back soon.

Cheer,

B

I can't help you with the second question, but I asked about account protection previously and was directed here:

Hi Lone Wolf,

Thanks for the response. I saw that IB was trying to get CHESS up and running as a 2011 priority, which I assume would improve the holding risk? (i.e. under CHESS, the holdings should be under my individual name). Has CHESS for IB gone ahead in 2011 as scheduled?

Also, still hoping to hear back to see if anyone has managed to pre-pay interest a year in advance on a margin loan through IB?

Cheers,

B

Yes, CHESS would be good. But unfortunately there has been no follow through on the CHESS matter. I don't know what their plans are there.
