Dumb YouTube question

We're on a relatively low volume broadband plan, and I avoid YouTube because I haven't a clue how to estimate how much I'm downloading. Can anyone give me an idea how big those files are likely to be?

Doesn't have to precise; just enough that I don't find my connection running at dialup speeds towards the end of the month.

I'm not an expert on this but my suggestions- your ISP should have a usage meter or you may be able to dl one off the web??
Wouldn't the file size and type of media determine how much bandwidth you're using? The thing to do maybe to do all your YouTube browsing at the end of the month so if you get shaped you only suffer a day or two before the next month starts.

Is there a limit to how much I can upload? Currently, the only limit is 100MB and 10 minutes in length per video (there is no length limit for Director accounts). We don't have any limit for the number of videos you can upload, and don't foresee adding a ceiling anytime in the future. So get crankin' and upload as many videos as you'd like””it's more content for the whole YouTube community to enjoy!

my missus did that with messenger at work.

Ghoti - this is the first month that I've used youtube, but the kids spend flamin hours watching it. (snakes rejurgitating pigs etc - really classy stuff lol, somethimes I worry)

But I can estimate that this month between us we've watched about 50hours of continuous youtube download, (deliberately round number - probably 30-70).

plus all the other net activities (both kids and I) googling, and emails, and checking share prices, and reading ASF posts, and stuff like that)

and my usage is 4GB so far - I recently took my limit up from 1GigaB to 5GigaB. so no probs. I reckon Ive watched 3GB of youtube for 50 hours.

PS soon we'll get tetrabyte usage - and we can say we watched 2 tets of youtube this month !!

It gets hard to estimate, because once you've downloaded something, then as long as you don't turn the computer off , it stays there ready to be played again - not sure how that works. Maybe someone out there can confirm , but I suspect it doesn't need to download anything again ( for example second time you play it, you can start at the second verse etc).

Anyway for what it's worth I estimate somewhere around 1GB per XXX 16 hours of first-time-down-load (i.e. 16 hours of the little red marker growing across the time line)

oops got the maths wrong there lol. As someone posted once before - there are 3 kinds of people, those that can add up and those that cant.

Or 10 kinds of people, those that use binary and those that dont.

warning - I could be way way out here - just that when you're using youtube - only a small percentage of the time are you actually downloading - and you usually decide early in the download if you want to complete it etc.

PS Flash says 100MB and /or 10 mins. If we assume that they are equivalent - then we get 1 Gig per 100mins - sheesh - only 1.6hours lol - out by a factor of 10 !! lol
(unfortunately that's not binary either ) -

In summary, ALL I know is that I have been hitting it REALLY hard for about 10 days , and the kids for the entire month, and I'm pleasantly surprised that still less than 5GB.

I'd almost forgotten I asked this. Thank you to everyone who answered.

2020's post is the kind of response I was hoping for. On the basis of that I'm going to assume that I'll be OK with up to 10 hours / month on our 1Gb plan. So far I've watched about 45 minutes in 2 months, so there seems to be a fair margin of safety.

I don't have access to another computer at work, so I have to use this one; OTOH my techie wouldn't dream of filtering my Web access, so I guess I shouldn't complain. I'm embarrassed to admit that I got so annoyed with our ISP (Optus) website that I refuse to go there and I've forgotten my login, so I've cut myself off from the usage metre. My techie still goes there sometimes, but not for a regular check that we're not blowing our allocation by mid month.

all in the interests of research you understand.
I had NORTON but obviously not enough.
My plan for the new year is to run multiple virus checkers.
I understand that there are a few free ones out there as well. (plus the likes of Adaware etc).
need to get some advice on how to let them happily coexist.

If you want to save a You Tube clip to your HD and check it's size in properties, this is the easiest way I've found without having to install any software on your computer.

Just cut and paste the You Tube URL into here:

Thanks for the warning. Irrelevant to me now, seeing as I've just become (well almost become) a Macaroony. Not that I've lost all my carefully nurtured Windows paranoia, but so far nothing's triggered it.
