Delayed Data vs. Trades

Sure this has been asked before (or I'm even more "new" than I thought) but I couldn't find.

So I'm going to be doing some day trading, probably not intra-day, but we'll see.

I'm not getting dynamic data, probably in the future as I move towards intra-day.

Therefore my data is 20min delayed.
My trades I assume can't be delayed or else this wouldn't really work?
So will I expect to be getting an email from CMC saying that I've bought shares @ X and the market is not there yet?

Or are my trades delayed 20min as well to line up with what I "perceive" as the live market.

There's a market where stocks are being trading continuously, live, in real time. The price that a person can trade depends on this REAL market. It doesn't change whether your data in delayed, truncated, translated to French, printed on a ticker tape etc etc.

How confident would you feel betting on a football match while watching a 20min delayed broadcast?

The only thing you can achieve by not having live data is terrible trading.

In effect, if you are trading a live market then you can only trade the actual prices currently offered. My understanding for the delayed prices is that the ASX charges a fee to the broker for each client they feed live prices to.

Imagine if you could trade the market as it was 20 minutes ago, whilst knowing where it is now! How rich one could become!

Edit: didn't realise SKC had posted before me until after clicking submit. Apologies SKC.

'Day trading' means you buy and sell that same position before the market closes on the same day.

CMC will allow you to see 3 levels of live data, regardless of your subscription level. Just click BUY and enter a symbol.

Thanks for all the replies.
I am using the wrong terminology, I must not be trying to be a day trader, but a "2 day" trader?

I appreciate if I'm going to be trading multiple times per day based on 20min old graphs I am destined to fail. Rest assured that is not what I'm trying to do, although I probably am still destined to fail as this is my first crack! But we will see what we will see.

Assumed there couldn't be some bizzaro world 20min delayed trading scenario with CMC, but I had to ask!

So my alternative to paying for dynamic data is to submit a heap of low value trades at market. [sounds heaps cheaper than paying for dynamic data! [/sarcasm]

Never assume. It was worth asking. As said above, regardless of whether you see delayed or live data, your orders will trigger and be filled in real time. This is fine for an end of day trader who puts orders in when the market is closed anyway.

Are you referring to GB's quote below?

He's not saying you have to buy anything. Clicking buy takes you to the buy order screen where you select your stock and how much you want at what price. On this page they show you the current price for your chosen stock.

Sort of, but now that you have explained GB means I understand and my joke makes no sense. Thanks for the clarification.
I should of realised this as I noted that some level of market depth was displayed when I placed my buy order this morning.

Most anti-climatic first day of trading! Didn't even buy...
