Here in sunshine plaza, my last order will be ..my last forever one.too horribly expensive..and i was a regular with birthday card the lot ..

I used to enjoy a 'flat white' Aussie style, but rarely visit cafes anymore. The daily ritual was as much an excuse to get out of the office, back then.

Now it's a pod, ristretto or arpeggio, from a machine, with a shot of soy milk. Maybe 2 a day. ...89c versus $6+

Downside as I'm not having much lactose these days, is that anything milk-based can be a bit turbulent on the tummy.

And I thought $7 for a cappuccino was expensive with weekend surcharge. For $13 it better be good coffee. $7 cappuccino was at a well known cafe in Flinders lane, Melbourne

My morning brew is Moka although during the day I may also use a french press. When out and about I may have a coffee such as last Thursday to the south of Canberra at a small, nondescript stop.

I wondered why Coles Express stopped the gold coin coffees here locally. $2 for a cup of flat white and wasn't too bad for this arabica coffee lover. Those were nice beans.
Higher prices are gonna quash margins thus, um, adjustments are made.

Singaporean coffee alternative to launch in Australia

Singaporean startup Prefer has entered a commercial partnership with The Coffee Ferm to bring its bean-free coffee products to Australia and New Zealand.

According to the company’s lifecycle assessment, Prefer’s coffee alternatives have 85 per cent lower emissions than traditional Arabica coffee. It also says its products are 50 per cent more affordable.

The ground “coffee” product is made from food manufacturing byproducts such as rice and soy, which are fermented and roasted to produce a coffee flavour. It is currently available in roast and ground, and ready-to-drink formats.

The partnership with The Coffee Ferm will license Prefer’s flavour IP to scale manufacturing and distribution in Australia and New Zealand. News of the partnership was part of a wider announcement that the company had raised AU$6.5 million in funding for the commercial launch of its new products: soluble coffee and cocoa powders.

“With the support of our new partners, the quality of our new products, and the grit of this team, we’re in a unique position to ensure coffee and cocoa are accessible to the masses while respecting our planet,” says Jake Berber, Co-Founder and CEO.

Prefer was founded in Singapore in 2022 by Jake Berber and Ding Jie Tan. The duo set out to transform upcycled ingredients into climate-resilient alternatives for the food industry.

Anyone trialled this yet?
It may have the flavour but what about the other goodies, ergo the volatile compounds that make a great coffee, great?

I found this: "While Prefer’s grounds are caffeine-free, the upside is the ability to add caffeine derived from tea and adjust levels as preferred." (https://esquiresg.com/introducing-bean-free-coffee-brand-prefer/) So no proper native caffeine? I'll think I'll pass...

Ciao Belli cafe Lismore NSW lunch-time, double shot long black mug, heated soy milk on side. Exceptionally well made, true Italiano. Order taken peremptorily but with cold friendless efficiency. Loitered over the coffee, phone scrolling for half an hour, was left alone, table not swept clean as a hint. Charged $5.50. Left a $10 tip for the above but also as a middle finger for judging me an old bum with three day growth, wearing trackies and only ordering coffee. Also you never know in Lismore when you're coming across a sourpuss who has been ruined by the last two floods. Added benefits of a country town: easy free parking, virtually all requirements in walking distance, less alienated populace, clean air ..

Byron Bay Coffee Company

After 2 and a half years of being closed due to the devastating floods that hit the Northern Rivers in Feb 2022, @ciaobellicafe has officially reopened in a brand-new Lismore location.
We couldn’t be happier for Daniella and Sabrina, who have put their hearts and Italian passion into bringing their beloved cafe back to life.
We're excited to see Ciao Belli thriving again and are so proud they’ve chosen to continue brewing with our beans.
Wishing you all the best on this new chapter 1f64f_1f3fc.png ~ If you're in the Lismore area, don't miss to pay them a visit at the Lismore Central Shopping Centre.

I buy coffee beans from a store which has a number of locations in Queensland. For sure it costs more but I am prepared to do that to support small Australian enterprises.

My Asian 'coffee' memory was the dreaded 3-in-1, which was a sachet of nescafé or equivalent, sugar and dehydrated milk powder.

only for the desperate

i remember years back , there were some using roasted dandelion root as a coffee substitute ( a caffeine-free one , of course )

during times of hardship, especially WW2, all manner of substitutes were around.

Ersatz coffees are beverages made from roasted grains, roots, or other plant-based materials that are used to mimic the taste and appearance of coffee, often when real coffee is unavailable or unaffordable. They are frequently caffeine-free and can be made from ingredients like chicory, acorns, or roasted grains.
