Can you make money investing in watches?

A good explanation, once you get past the first few minutes.

"Fun first, finances second".

This is actual a great video on just general investing as well.

I will say that I think we might be coming to a point where everyone starts flogging luxury goods. I noticed people hocking brand handbags. The show pony rich are getting a rinse in this market

They always do get a rinse, the rich look at me brigade, I have generally found are geared to the eyeballs.

Also with the current turmoil that Trump has caused, it has highlighted the fragility of our economy and the middle class plus the lower levels of the upper class will be expecting a correction and be planning accordingly. ;)

Only my thoughts, but from my experience, those most geared are the most fearful of a correction.
Usually a great time to buy Harleys, collectable cars, caravans and watches.

At the moment, everything in Australia is dependent on the price of iron ore and houses, what a mess.

I don't want to be critical and I hate being personal about politicians, but when Albo says he has "always been underestimated" he isn't wrong.

It actually shows how bereft Australia is, of quality politicians, when he is the best on offer IMO.

Picked up another watch, this on because I like the look and it was manufactured in the same year I was born. $250, price included a service and new crystal glass, leather strap and postage from overseas.

The current economic hardship must be catching up with some. A new pop-up pawn shop opened up in the city, I walked in for a look and my jaw hit the floor. Full of expensive luxury bags, jewelry and watches, all of it looked brand new. I asked my wife "is all this new stock, why does it all look new?" I don't know a thing about women's bags and purses. She said that people buy them as investments and only show them off once in a while. I've never seen new let alone secondhand handbags and watches with sticker prices of $20,000, $45,000+.

My usual shopping is eBay, Market Place and the local secondhand shop.

I like Seiko and Omega's, so they are the brands I concentrate with my research. Today I picked up another watch for my collection at a quarter of its new price and with the original box.

Well that is interesting... I wonder about the provenance of the stuff ? There are many reports of high quality copies of designer bags in the marketplace.

This would seem to be a great opportunity to sell these products as theoretically genuine.

I did ask that, and I was told that they all come with authentication documents, some even have the original invoice. the pawn shop was an up-market shop.

As for other places of sale, it all comes down to 'buyer beware'. Research all items of interest, and then research the one found before any money is transferred, including the seller's reputation. I'm only playing with pocket money. My only hobbies are books and wine, and now watches.

A useful hint for anyone looking on eBay; if you find something click on the heart or 'Add to Watchlist', usually the seller will send an offer with a lower price. And then you make a counteroffer. nothing ventured, nothing gained

Look at these beauties. owning something like that is owning a piece of Japanese watch making history -

Received delivery this morning, and I am very impressed. For a watch that was made in the same year I was born, late 1960’s, it is in immaculate condition.

I’m going to try find out what the original strap style was and see if I can find one.

Picked up another secondhand watch, for one of my kids that asked me to find an automatic watch.

Orient Bambino V4 with the blue face. In mint condition and it came with the original box and paperwork, and one third the price of new. The owner had been trying to sell it for a few months on Market Place, he dropped the price twice, and I offered him what I thought was fair and he accepted.

There are a lot of used watches on the market for sale, but many of them are in poor condition hidden by tricky photography.

Can you make money with watches? Like shares, as long as you don’t get attached to them.

A close customer knows of my new watch collecting hobby, and today saw the watch I’m wearing and offered me twice what I paid for it.

It is the first time I have worn it, and I quite like it. The light plays with the angles of the slots on t face, making it an interesting object in the sunlight.

He saw the indecision in m face and said he will come back next week with the money.

I don’t think I’m going to be making any money from watches 🤤

Not a collectable or an investment.

I recently found out that the Timex Men's Easy Reader Indiglo Watch is a 40 year old model still in production and has sold millions of pieces.

That spiked my interest, and the Indiglo illumination completely hooked me. I needed to get one, I needed to have a look and feel of this icon.

Is it a cheap and nasty watch, or is there some quality to it?

Looking online, it is possible to pick up these watches super cheap, and in various styles. I ordered one online with free delivery for $99 and 2 year warranty.

Today it arrived. I’m pretty impressed with it. It’s no Citizen but it is fun and the quality is good for the low price, I love the way at it illuminates in the dark. It feels good to hold and wears on the wrist comfortably.

Some reviews mention that the ticking is excessively loud, I can’t confirm that yet because I was in a noisy environment when checking it out, I could only hear it when I put it next to my ear. The case is brass rather stainless steel.

This watch might fill in for my temporary work watch, while I wait for my Seiko to return from servicing. I’ve already looked at some metal straps.

In the middle of 2023, a basket of luxury businesses tracked by Goldman Sachs recorded a 33 per cent rise in sales in the Asia-Pacific region, which includes Australia, over one quarter. Since the middle of last year, sales began to fall. They only returned to growth recently.

Filings with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission shows Rolex is a rare bright spot among its luxury peers. The privately owned Swiss watchmaker’s sales have soared over the last year, from $374 million in 2023 to $414.4 million in the 12 months to December 31. The company’s net profit also increased – by nearly 25 per cent – to $107 million.

The watchmaker is one of three Swiss giants alongside The Swatch Group, which manufactures Omega and Richemont, the luxury giant behind high-end brands including A. Lange & Sohne, Piaget and Jaeger-LeCoultre. Its watches retail for anywhere between $8000 and $40,000.

An analyst who specialises in luxury retail, says Rolex has managed to avoid the broader slowdown in high-end jewellery because it has not increased its prices as aggressively as other companies. Major luxury brands, according to Bernstein analysis, raised prices by an average of 36 per cent between 2020 and 2023.

The biggest reason companies have struggled is greedflation, where a lot of these brands have raised prices, which really reduced the brand DNA and desirability,” he says. “Chanel price increases have been double-digit per cent increases. What Rolex did this year is – they usually release their price increases in the first week of January – globally is their watches only went up 4.8 per cent. They’ve been very moderate in terms of pricing inflation.”

Took my 25 year old Seiko Kinetic back to its birthplace in Japan.

Seiko may be the king of affordable quality classic and collatable watches. I've kept an eye on the marketing of these types of watched and they sell out within days, sometimes to be re-sold on the private market for a higher price. Nothing compared to a Rolex or Patek Philippe, but the outlay is significantly less. Regardless, it's going to be a hard living for most people that think they can make money from watch collections.

Inspired by the Negroni, SRPL96J celebrates the rich craft and ritual behind both fine watchmaking and mixology.

The visual centrepiece of the watch is the captivating deep red dial, a tone directly inspired by the bold character of the Negroni. Adding to the richness of the design is a distinctive dial pattern, drawn from the intricate detailing found in traditional Negroni glassware. The dial is framed by slender hour markers, contributing to the watch’s refined aesthetic.

In celebration of the launch, Conte Sydney has created a bespoke ‘Seiko Negroni’, featuring an exclusive cherry blossom infused vermouth that fuses Japanese culture with Italian cocktail tradition. The bespoke cocktail's rich red tones directly attributed to the colouring of the timepieces dial.

Australasian Limited Edition of 1,000.

The 40.2mm stainless steel case features a golden-brown bezel, dual-curved sapphire crystal, and 100m water resistance. Inside beats the reliable Seiko 6R55 automatic calibre, delivering 72 hours of power reserve. Limited to 3,000 pieces worldwide, the SPB529 and will be available from October 2025.
