Accuracy of stock recommendations

On Comsec for some stocks it has a "consensus recommendation" as to whether a stock should be sold/bought.

I was wondering whether the accuracy of this had ever been assessed in that if the recommendations were followed would they beat the market over the medium to long term (I suspect in the short term they may be self-fulfilling prophecies if enough people listened to them)?

Nobody can beat market all the time. We all make mistakes. Some research could be useful. If their recommendations are based on good high quality research then we can trust. Still some forecast can go wrong. Stocks picking is an art.

I've read that the ratings are basically bull**** (as they are reluctant to list thing as sell) and the written analysis is what people in the industry pay attention to.

I do take a cursory look at "Market Consensus" when it's offered to me. I use the information as a guide to what kind of B3S3 the gullible bunnies are fed. Very often, I find said B3S3 is ad odds with the real market situation (i.e. trading data recorded in my charts).

Just one example: Morningstar have been rating ERA at $5.50 for months. Even bunnies no longer believe that ...
