Smoking not all bad

I believe smoking cigarettes should be encouraged after an enjoyable root and when enjoying a beer in good company.

I further believe it should be encouraged after a good breakfast of hash browns, bacon, egg, snags, tomatoes and baked beans.

Also it should be encouraged in individual circumstances where a heightened sensation can be achieved by the addition of a quick fix of nicotine.

It is also sensible to have a smoke when danger has been averted, in war, after car and train smashes and when a missus or husband turns feral.

I realise many wowsers will disagree , but this is my opinion.

I am highly against smoking,

not only is it bad for the person smoking but what p*sses me off most is when you get an ignorant smoker who smokes right in front of your face and you cop all the passive smoke

i don't want lung cancer nor does smoking contribute positively to the environment!!

all it contributes to positively is to government revenue

edit - it is also a burden on the hospital system !!!

Dont wish to offend anyone, last time I mentioned this, I managed to though..

I remember reading a media report of a study that concluded that smoking does not financially cost the "system"

reason is because despite extra medical expenses incurred, this was more than made up for by the savings on payment of Pensions, due to reduced life expectancy of smokers.

They pay a lot of tax via duty as well

Totally agree!

Hope that one day ban will apply to suburbia too.

Would be nice to have cigarette smoke free gated secure suburb.

Great topic GG. And you are so right.

When you think about properly smoken and drinken represent some of the finest and most valuable parts of our social system. For example the tobacco industry is or could have been worth an absolute fortune in terms of employment (farmers, distributors, lawyers, doctors, ect) tax revenue, and finally of course helping to ensure that the state doesn't get caught with too many unproductive pensioner drones.:D

And grog of course is even better. Same enormous employment opportunities but even bigger bangs with car crashes, personal violence and or course prisons. (Private prisons are just so profitable!!) And think of all the stupid destructive things that are done after a few drinks that require repairs or new purchase. Absolute goldmine!

Overall I'm sure that between then smokes and grog would contribute at least 20% to our GDP . Without them we would be in one the worst depressions of all time.

PS What about some good old fashioned poker machines as well

:):):):)

Ah yes Happy, the old gated suburb. that secluded area where everyone irons their smalls and the grubby down and dirty everyone else cannot disturb the smoke free nostrils of the basket weavers.

Get down and dirty, mate, its quite good fun.

There will always be the great chasm between smokers and non

I'm a non have a great imitate life, enjoy low monthly payments for health insurance and have extra money for Chocolate:)!

Smokers are not always aware of how revolving it is as a non-smoker to passionately kiss a smoker. I did it once and never again. It was one of the most important factors which attracted me to my partner - not tasting the smoke or smelling it on his body or clothes.

Each to their own

A good point Green. I only smoke on occasions now, the smell off clothes is a put off all right.

However bacchanalia, orgies , casinos and pubs should be smoke allowed zones.

My point though , is, that it is not all bad.

Just as eating chocolates has its good points.

Passive chocs!!

I am not complaining just have to be little bit more patient, matter of time.

Years ago everybody could smoke everywhere, almost, petrol stations and few other places were off limits for a while, I did not think I’ll ever be able to see family area in restaurant or a pub.

Even last year entry to public buildings was in permanent smoke screen as employees barely stepped out, now it is 10 or is it 15 metres?
No smoking with children in a car, so pendulum is surely going in the right direction.

I just cannot understand why somebody’s democratic right to smoke has to affect my democratic right not to smoke and breath air without cigarette smoke.

I feel so sorry for all those sad sausages heading off to the gym in the mornings to do their shoulders and knees in, when they could be having a gentle walk as I do.

They'll only do their knees and shoulders in if they use incorrect form when training.

If you are going to ingest stimulants, why not do something harder you pansy?

Have a go you mug!

It's not all bad, boundless energy, and great for keeping the body fat down. Just ask Cuzzy!

What would you suggest mate. I don't want to end up playing for Richmond.

Yes definately agree with bacchanalia.

I must agree with the point about the smell on the clothes, and the taste when you kiss!

Aus. govt takes about $5b a year on tobacco excise according to the ATO web site, so ciggie smokers are $3b in front of the costs quoted earlier in the thread, if they are right at about $2B.

Govt doesn't have to pay pensions or health care for you for 30 extra years tied drooling to a chair in an old folk's home either - did they count that?

Also, the death stats are probably a bit exaggerated - anyone who smokes and dies of heart failure probably has smoking attributed as the cause.

Not to say it ain't very bad for you - how could drawing poisonous smoke into your lungs all the time not be bad for you?

I hear Obama is back on the smokes with all the stress and everything of the imminent presidency.

I'm going to have a few cigars I brought back from South Africa, (cuban), at Christmas time.

I do enjoy a good cigar.

I hope Obama too can have a few if he can sneak away from Michelle and 10000 cameras on the quiet.

Smoking could ward off memory loss. Perhaps a few smokes a day could help me remember where I put my glasses.

OLDER adults who are starting to have problems with memory may benefit from small amounts of nicotine therapy, according to a US study.

The research in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, included 74 non-smokers with an average age of 76. Half were given a daily nicotine patch for six months, the other half wore a placebo patch.

Those on nicotine therapy showed better results on cognitive tests for attention, memory, as well as how fast and consistently they could process information.

After six months on the patch, the nicotine group "regained 46 per cent of normal performance for age on long-term memory, whereas the placebo group worsened by 26 per cent over the same time period," said the study's authors.
