Graffiti

Happy Certainly I agree there's too much graffiti on trains (plus other valdalism) - an strangely enough I noticed a really badly graffi'ed train at Central the other day just before you poted this ...

but does anyone else remember this one... ( ex hostage turned MP Seve Pratt - painted over 'graffiti' with media present by invite - only to find it was art that had been comissioned by the council ;)

"I cleaned that graffiti off for a very good reason. It was the most offensive piece of work that I could identify that had been neglected for a very long period.

"I don't mean offensive in the art sense, it may be judged to be good art or bad art, but where it was located."

MP Steve Pratt destroys legal mural for publicity stunt
Artwork had been paid for under government scheme
Dispute over whether MP was told it was art

AN ACT politician who painted over a mural as part of an anti-graffiti stunt was told beforehand that it was a commissioned artwork, a community art spokesman says.
Steve Pratt, a Liberal MLA who is the territory's opposition urban services spokesman, spent four hours last Saturday removing what he claimed was graffiti from a cemetery wall in suburban Woden.

But the stunt backfired when Chief Minister Jon Stanhope yesterday revealed the mural was not illegal graffiti but an artwork paid for by a local sporting club.

Mr Pratt – a former aid worker who was accused of spying and taken hostage for several months in the former Yugoslavia in 1999 – denies doing anything wrong.

He says he asked the department of Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) about the mural and warned TAMS Minister John Hargreaves of his intentions in three separate press releases.

"If he was so concerned that I was about to attack a legal piece of a gazetted artwork, he failed to tell me," Mr Pratt said.

But a spokesman for the ACT Community Art program, run by TAMS, said Mr Pratt was told last week that the mural was a commissioned artwork.

Asked if Mr Pratt's office had contacted the program, the spokesman said: "Yes, that's correct."

Asked if the program had told Mr Pratt the mural was a commissioned artwork, the spokesman said: "Yes, that is also correct."

The ACT Government has called for a police investigation, saying Mr Pratt should make a public apology and pay $3000 compensation to the artist.

Mr Pratt has refused to apologise.

"I do not regret my actions or what I have done," he said.

"I cleaned that graffiti off for a very good reason. It was the most offensive piece of work that I could identify that had been neglected for a very long period.

"I don't mean offensive in the art sense, it may be judged to be good art or bad art, but where it was located."

Mr Hargreaves accused Mr Pratt of trying to destroy community art.

"At the end of the day this is artwork, not graffiti," he said.

Mr Stanhope was last year forced to sack a staff member caught spray-painting political graffiti at a shopping centre.

I like some graffetti as well especially the political, philosophical and social commentary...in fact sometimes I think we need more...wher else do the general public, youth get a forum to express their ideas?

NZ JAILED FOR KILLING TEENAGE GRAFFITI ARTIST
By New Zeland correspondent Kerri Ritchie

A New Zealand man who killed a teenage graffiti artist he caught spray-painting his home has been sentenced to more than four years in jail in a case that has gripped the country.
Fifty-year-old Bruce Emery grabbed a knife and chased Pihema Cameron after he caught the 15-year-old spray-painting graffiti on the garage of his South Auckland home just over a year ago.
The teenager died from a stab-wound to the chest. The businessman told police he was defending himself.
Emery was found not guilty of murder and convicted of manslaughter.
The teenagers mother, Leanne Cameron, is outraged.
"Did any of you fellows see his face? It's painless, he looked at us an put his head down," she said.
Emery's lawyer, Chris Comesky, says both sides involved have suffered, and the victim's family must move on.
"Family members of the deceased saying they'd love to rip his eye-balls out, they are filled with hate," he said.
Emery was sentenced to four years and three months in prison.

Pity that State could not prevent this tragedy.

If student can pay HECS, why vandals shouldn’t pay the clean up cost plus penalty for inconvenience plus 50% profit which could be used to other noble causes.

If attacker under age?
Child goes to vandal children camp and parent pays for cleanup, if parent has to be eased up of property or any other valuable possession to pay for damage, so be it.

Should vandal have any property, forced bankruptcy could be a quick recovery path.

Vandals should also clean their handiwork themselves, paying for chemicals and hire of equipment.

Make it forced employment until enough -replacement employees- are caught.

Kind of self-sufficiency system > DO + UNDO = NO CHANGE

I wish the government would encourage graffiti in public spaces. I think private property is up to the owners discretion. But public places and public transport; I think it should be encouraged. Trains are plain boring, which could use a bit of colour.

AUSTRALIANS JAILED OVER LONDON GRAFFITI SPREE
By Europe correspondent Emma Alberici

Six Australian graffiti vandals have been jailed in London after being found guilty of defacing British trains.
Appearing in the Southwark Crown court in south-east London were 24-year-olds Jake Shumack and Alex Wisman, 23-year-old Luke Vassell and 22-year-olds Adrian Hing, Marcus Wisman and Scott Mulhearn - all from Sydney.

The gang of six youths known as the AMF Crew left a trail of international destruction before being caught in the act in London and found guilty of conspiracy to commit criminal damage.
Worldwide, they are reported to have caused more than $400,000 worth of damage.

The men were sentenced to between eight and 16 months' jail.
They are also wanted in five other jurisdictions for the same crime.

What about $400,000 worth of compensation?

But at least they are locked up to cool down a bit and have time to think about it.

VICTORIA POLICE CRACK DOWN ON GRAFFITI
Graffiti artists in Melbourne's south have felt the wrath of police this year with a major crackdown netting more than 100 offenders.
Fed up with a 64 per cent jump in graffiti last year, police at Kingston, a municipality in Melbourne's southeast, laid charges over more than 1100 offences and recovered $98,000 at court as compensation to victims.
Kingston police have carried out nearly two-thirds (65 per cent or 47 raids) of all searches in Victoria over the past nine months of people suspected of carrying spray paint cans, Inspector Neil Paterson said.
Nearly 95 per cent of all raids on Victorian houses for graffiti-related products have also been carried out by Kingston police, a statement from Victoria Police said.
Most of the offenders were male teenagers. Once arrested police often found they were responsible for other offences such as shoplifting, theft from cars, assault and robbery, Insp Paterson said.
"We are using a range of powers available to us under graffiti legislation to search suspected graffiti offenders and their homes for any evidence that can link them to property damage," he said.
"We keep an extensive database of all graffiti in the area and can quickly match a person with a large number of offences at the click of a button."
He said police have just begun piloting a new program in the area to provide intensive case management to first time offenders to help them "break the cycle".
Offenders can only be referred to the new program by police.
Kingston is home to about 147,000 people.

Fantastic news, they should be charged $98,000 each to pay for all the damage, such a sum in total bit of a joke, but good start!

Someone earlier mentioned the work of Banksy. His website.

Spotted this on the net today. Battle of the graffiti artists. Few more good pics too. Classic!
Famed graffiti whiz Banksy has ignited a street art war after painting over a rival's work that was created 24 years ago.

The legendary artist painted the image of a workman taking down the original 1985 mural by artist Robbo on a wall in Regent’s Canal, north London.

Robbo immediately hit back by painting over the workman, as his supporters took to the web to express their outrage at Banksy’s interference.

"Someone who's been around as long as Banksy should know the drill by now," one wrote.

I am sorry but I like graffiti. The train lines used to be full of it and it made my journey into work interesting. There is so much wasted talent out there, so many great artist with so little artspace to perform.

Many of the rail lines in Adelaide used to have the most amazing peices of graffiti, now they are painted over...a dull white canvas is very boring.

I am all for graffiti, just not on my property ;)

True. Graffiti is street art and completely different to tagging. It's not always done well, but it's a shame to see good examples cast in the same light as tagging.

There is some great graf out there. In Prague there is a little alley that contains the "John Lennon Wall". The graffiti on that wall is so-so, but at the end of the street is some excellent art.

There is also some amazing graf beside the Frank Zappa memorial in Villinus. When I get back home I'll post up pics of both.

The funniest I've seen though is the saying " I think therefore I am" written in ornate writing with an excellent mural beside it and a wag wrote underneath it "I'm pink therefore I'm spam."

cheers,

I catch the train to work (the good 'ol Hurstbridge line for the Mexicans amongst you) and on the way there is a small soccer club house which abuts the train line. It is painted a garish purple colour but its surrounds are always kept as neat as a pin.

Unfortunately for the groundsman of the aforementioned club house, it sits along the well trodden path of the scores of taggers that seem to ply their nefarious trade with great gusto along this section of track. Thus once every week or so the club house is covered in the unintelligible scawl that is a taggers unique calling card.

The groundsman of this building must, however, be a man of great determination for once every fortnight the club house will re-appear sans juvenile scrawl thanks to the application of a fresh coat of plum-coloured paint. Off course this is a victory which the tagging army will not allow and within days 'Botoks' or some such talentless outrage will have been re-applied all over the walls of the said building.

This vicious circle of painting, juvenile scrawl and re-painting has now been playing out outside my train window for the two years I have been catching the train. The no doubt gnarled and weathered old groundsman of my imagination is my hero for the determination he displays in not letting the wave after wave of texta-bearing emos destroy the amenity of his club house.

No doubt with the upcoming festive season in mind, this stalwart of his local community once again re-painted the club house in that bright sheen of purply pink. Imagine my dismay then this morning when I noticed that the club house had almost been tagged into oblivion overnight by the retarded youth.

C'mon kids - time to do something constructive with all that creative energy and also give the efforts of this old timer the respect they deserve! This is not the Bronx after all but rapidly gentrifying inner city Melbourne.

Signing off on my rant for the day.

Every generation has their punks. They probably couldn't care less about what you think of their vandalism or putting their energy into something more constructive. Tagging isn't creative. These are the same type of kids that mug people, hassle your teenage daughters, key cars, leave broken bottles all over the place and stinking like urine.

I often wonder why we have such soft laws on crime and reading some of the complete dribble above, confirms why.....

There are plenty of ways to express yourself without resorting to graffiti...

Sure grafitti art is a legitimate form of art and allowing some public areas for graffitti art is probably a very very sensible option and possible solution, similar to the Police drags at Eastern creek in Sydney has helped alleviate some street racing....

But to sit here and say graffitti in its present form is good... cmon...let me graffitti your house and car and see how you like it.... put your address in here and I will arrange it for you......the bastards should be put to hard labour at $4 per hour until they pay the damage bill to the right ful owner and society....and then the same amount to a public fund to clean the rest they didnt get caught doing....

I love punks , I grew up listening to the sex pistols and now Greenday is my favourite band in the world, but mate Graffitti is just destructive petty crime......

Different things. "Punk" is an art genre, while "punk" is a term to describe young, petty thugs.

I wish surface area used for this THING should be legally obtained and approved by owners and future receipients.

As it is now most is done under the umbrella of robbery.

The two I mentioned have been approved. The John Lennon wall is owned by a Monk, Priest or Brotherhood association from memory and is happy to have it there. Likewise the city of Vilinus with the FZ wall. But please, do do your own research. I might just be cyberly graffiti-ing this thread.

cheers,
