If student can pay HECS, why vandals shouldn’t pay the clean up cost plus penalty for inconvenience plus 50% profit which could be used to other noble causes.

If attacker under age?
Child goes to vandal children camp and parent pays for cleanup, if parent has to be eased up of property or any other valuable possession to pay for damage, so be it.

Should vandal have any property, forced bankruptcy could be a quick recovery path.

Vandals should also clean their handiwork themselves, paying for chemicals and hire of equipment.

Make it forced employment until enough -replacement employees- are caught.

Kind of self-sufficiency system > DO + UNDO = NO CHANGE
 
I get vandalism on my office building every week, we have cameras up, signs, everything and it still gets done constantly, as soon as its painted over its back again. I'm only leasing so it doesn't cost me anything, but it must cost the owner a fortune. I agree, if they are caught they should pay the repair bill and do some community service.
 
We have caught and dealt with G/A's I our industrial area.
8 of us stayed the night and hid vehicles.
We dont get bothered anymore.

The things they valued were valued far less after that night.
Still happens in the area but not to us.
We have an understanding.
 
This is what pisses me off about this country, too bloody soft!

Repeat offenders (3 times) should have their one of their hands cut off, next time cut the other off.

I am sorry but I like graffiti. The train lines used to be full of it and it made my journey into work interesting. There is so much wasted talent out there, so many great artist with so little artspace to perform.

Many of the rail lines in Adelaide used to have the most amazing peices of graffiti, now they are painted over...a dull white canvas is very boring.

I am all for graffiti, just not on my property

Perhaps I'll put this one own as wasted opportunity!

Our Excavators get hit all the time as they are left on sites.

One of the guys remarked---Why cant they tag it as the Company Logo.?
He left a note gaffa taped to the rear of one of the 12 tonners.

"If your going to paint it this is our logo--RWI"

Weeks later there it was painted "Tagged" and at the bottom signed RWI.

All machines are painted with a graffiti solution which allows removal by just washing off.Would rather they paint them that Vandalise them.
 

Totally agree Stop_the_clock, I'm in Melbourne and my train trip to the city was far more interesting before the Comm Games (where the council decided to paint over all the graffiti with huge slabs of bleak, stark grey). The trip to Richmond is still ok though, typical council, they couldn't be bothered going that far!

Don't get me wrong, artists who tag and scrawl all over the place should be hung drawn and quartered, but those who actually put thought into their work, through stencilling or murals improve the view on the way to and from work each day (ala Banksy http://www.banksy.co.uk/outdoors/index.html)
 
Yes there are two distinctive forms of graffiti: Artistsic and Vandalism.

Pity they are both lumped into the same category.

This sh_it is just bloody annoying

But this is impressive and it sad to see this kinda artwork being painted over...lets all live on a blank canvas...what a boring world that would be!

Since some are impressed and some don’t mind to have walls painted why don’t we make it legitimate.

Potential art supplier can rent the advertising place and pay monthly fee like for ring-tone or mobile phone plan.

If it complies with general community wish and council to satisfy that material is not offensive, who wants to participate can place their boring place for auction and normal process will take place.

Personally I don’t think peeing is acceptable for public display, it is cheeky, but not appropriate.
And I don’t think vomiting, defecating is appropriate either.

Of course others will have other opinions.

As it is now it is theft of surface, and often combined with theft of paint, but two wrongs don’t make it right.
 

Sniffers should have exemption?

I totally agree....

I live in a newish apartment block in the city with security access to foyer and lifts.

However, somebody (who must be a resident here or at least visiting one) has vandalised the internal lifts with swear words.

Completely pointless.....

If I ever catch some idiot in person doing it, I will make damn sure they think twice about doing it again.....

This type of activity makes me extremely angry...........

Totally agreed.

At work we used to spend $$$ trying to keep electrical boxes on the street clean. Basically gave up when it got to the point of them being painted again before we even had a chance to put the official sticker back on. Now they only get cleaned if someone complains and then only one repainting in any 12 month period.

Easiest solution was to encourage businesses to paint them to match the building. Dual benefit as that way someone else pays and also they usually get left alone then too. Likewise the ones with legitimate art painted on them also get left alone most of the time.

Graffiti is nothing compared to actual vandalism and serious damage though so if that's all they want to do then they might as well keep doing it.
 

Happy, in the town I live in there is a dedicated wall about 500 metres long for graffiti. Some of it is incredibly talented. The hope was that it would prevent the besmirching of the rest of the town. Hasn't worked as far as I can tell. I guess the problem is that the little toads are really hard to catch - they are hardly likely to ply their trade in broad daylight.
 

For the little toads it is a great outlet and thrill in an otherwise dull life for most of them. Worked among graffitti offenders for a number of years and in fact produced a paper on their art and culture whilst at uni. The so called offender is usually very creative and bright but has turned to his crime for the attention he usually lacks from parents and community alike.

To cut a long story short youth today are marginalised by the social norms aimed towards the entertainment of adults. Need to be 18 to enter hotels casinos etc. When I was a kid it was normal for youngsters and adults to attend dances together in the local town. The grown blokes kicked out of the pubs at 6pm. The good old days sigh,,, are gone.
 

Maybe you could have a Body Corporate meeting and vote to install hidden security camera installed in the lift and other strategic areas prone to attacks.

Once you go past do gooders and privacy defenders you might even catch somebody not only placing graffiti but also scratching / damaging equipment, littering plus more.
