Best place to travel for a month

Not sure if this has been covered before, but I am wondering where the best destination for a 1 month holiday would be. Any thoughts people?
 
Considering you can get to almost any country on earth in less than a couple of days, I say.... anywhere.

I'm partial to Europe for its art, history and diverse cultures but it all depends what you are looking for.

Are you backpacking, wanting to stay in posh hotels, doing some adventure travel, wanting to unwind somewhere quiet?.... when you figure out 'why' you are travelling, the 'where' will become a little more obvious.
 
What do you like in a holiday MrFish... water I presume?
Salty or fresh? Waves or calm?

If water's not a prerequisite - I'll have a quick stab -say... Nth Thailand.
 
Depends what sort of holiday you want. Beach, mountains, historical sights, cities? etc.

For me, one month is a perfect time to do Peru justice.

Other possibilities:

Hanoi to Siep Reap
Jakarta to Bali
Western Islands of Fiji - Mamanucas and Yasawas.
Mexico City to Cancun (doing it next week )
Venice to Rome (maybe get a Greek Island in)
UK
Vancouver to Montreal
Kenya and Mt Kilamanjaro
Bangkok - Chang Mai - Crabi region - Ko Phan Gang

Or, why not check out Australia?

Ignore everything else just come and spend your money in Ballarat!
 
Oh I forgot one:

Cairo - Luxor - Petra - Jerusalem

Classic trip.
 
Sorry I guess I should be exact. I don't have a lot of money but would like to travel somewhere that is safe, and where people are friendly. I would like to met people, but don't want the organised tour thing. Someone mentioned vietnam or around there. Any suggestions?

Nah mate not interested in posh hotels. Europe is too expensive isn't it? I guess I would like to travel to get to know a different culture. not really sure.
 
Vietnam is great! I flew in to Hanoi, did Halong Bay, and there's a place in the hills that is really nice but didn't go. Then just train it down the coast going to Hui, Hoi Ann, Na Trang and then to Ho Chi Minh. From there you could go to the southern beaches which are supposed to be nice, but I went from there to Cambodia - Phnom Pen (sorry spelling) and Siem Reap for the Angkor region. You could even get a bit of Laos in if that was a priority. Very safe, very cheap once you are there (US$15) for a nice hotel, and the travel internal is cheap too. Food is awesome and the people are really nice. The only thing a bit crappy is getting hasselled by touts trying to trick you into buying stuff, and the hotel staff will take a sizeable commission to arrange ongoing bus/train tickets (double even!) Great place.

Hotels are very cheap and clean. As I said, $15 US for something with a queen bed, TV, fridge, ensuite, maybe even a pool. You can pay more or less. $30 would get you a pretty good place. (this is 2005 prices so maybe add $5). Get a Lonely Planet and you'll see all the options.
 
I've done quite a bit of travel, especially last year.

Europe is good, but expensive.

Thailand and Vegas are my 2 favourite spots. Both are cheap, have excellent weather, great nightlife and so much to do.

A month in Vegas may kill you though.. Go to Miami, New York and Mexico as well.
 
go to thailand......work your way round the coast ...take the ferry to Koh samui....and fly back to bangkok then back to sydney.....nice and cheap and great fun...especially samui.....hire a trail bike (motorbike) and ride around with no crash helmet in the sun...at night...great clubs...

You can stay in a 5 star resort with breakfast included for $90 AUD per room per night. if you where there for a month, you could strike up a very very good deal with a local that has an apartment somewhere.

There are endless trips you could do in a month. I just got back on the Philippines and you could easily spend a month there - and that's not just because the traffic's so bad that's how long it'll take you to drive to the airport.

Manila, Cebu, Boracay and any of the 7000 odd other islands would make a great trip.

Poland would make another great trip for a month - Warsaw, Wroclaw, Krakow, Zakopane with Prague thrown in for good measure.

Riga, Minsk (see Russia's last surviving Communist state), Moscow and St Petersburg would be awesome as well.
 
Other than Cairo & Luxor I recommend EGYPT's Sharm Elsheikh - (don't get scared by the "SHEIKH" in the name ).

World class resorts, entertainment & amazing weather & activities.

My best ever holidays were there, prices are amazing for 5 stars environment ($70-$120/night avg), in terms of activities, practically if it exists ....you'll find it there starting from safari trips, buggy rides, water sports, parachuting, Casinos or just relaxing...... I sound like I'm writting an adv for them

Its more like vegas for being in the middle of the desert & all of a sudden you realise that this small town of entertainment exists.

Google it if interested & be careful with internet pricing...too high....you'll always get half price from any reputable travel agent & another discount will always be for booking really early (5-6 months before travel).

I'm currently looking at cruises ex Singapore, visiting Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and ending Hong Kong. Never done a cruise and I like the idea of unpacking once but still visiting several places.

Has anyone done anything like this and can say if they enjoyed it or not?

South East Asia is without a doubt the best place to travel for a month on a budget. I've been to Thailand 3 times in the last 2 years (and Vietnam once) and each time have lived on less than $300 a week inclusive of all accomodation, food, booze and transport.

Central thailand is excellent. Krabi is awesome, high limestone cliffs flanking beautiful beaches, but without the touristy look of Phuket. And its only a 1hr Ferry trip to Ko Phi Phi anyway - which is half the reason people go to Phuket. Ko Lanta is also close by, another very nice island which plenty of coral reefs and beaches (and few tourists). They would be my two picks for the West side of Thailand. The East coast is dominated by Ko Samui in terms of tourism...... Chaweng Beach is the tourist centre of the island.... dont go there! If you go to Ko Samui stay somewhere quiter, as Chaweng is very busy, dirty and noisy. If a more peaceful island is your thing, an hours ferry to the north you'll find Ko Phangan, reknowned for holding the monthly full moon parties at Had Rin. The rest of the island is incredibly peaceful though, with quiet roads (hire a motorbike - I'd never ridden before and found it a breeze) and lots of desserted beaches to swim and relax. Ko Tao is another great island, again an hour from Ko Phangan to the north. Its even quieter! Has GREAT snorkelling! Accomodation in Ko Phangan and Ko Tao is much cheaper than Samui or Phuket as well - a bungalow on the beach with fan and bathroom can be had for 300-500BHT a night ($10-15)

Vietnam however would be my pick if I was to return to SE Asia. Its people are friendlier, its cheaper and much less developed (didnt see a single macdonalds!). Hotels with A/C and bathroom were US$10 per night at all the major stop offs down the coast. Halong Bay just East of Hanoi is also amazing - US$55 for 2 nights staying on a boat in pristine waters with all meals included is well worth it! And a bus ticket from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City costs only US$35, with stop offs at Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Da Lat and HCMC. The trains are also very efficient and run overnight.
