hi everyone, im 17 and started my diploma in stockbroking and investment. I had grown up in the reserve bank watching the trading floor day after day and fell inlove. Just wondering if anyone could give me a few tips on getting started and what to watch out for (general stuff) thanks!

Good to see starting out young, I was 16 when I started getting into the markets.

How were you able to go to the trading floor day after day ?

I remember when I was 17 working at Woolworths. They had the stock price on the wall. It was updated around weekly, whenever the manager could be bothered. I remember seeing it rise and fall over the months and thought wow if I just bought when it was at x I could have sold at y. I noticed that it went up and came back down again and thought "if I just bought when it was lower I could sell when it was higher and make money".

I remember my step dad saying that I should take $500 and stick it in the stock market lol. I never did. He told me how he owned Telstra shares and I saw him get a $50 dividend and I figured heh well why would I put in $500 for a few bucks a year in dividends. Even if the stock rose 10% I would make only 50 bucks, I would prefer to buy a nintendo.

I then remember thinking uranium could be big and was tempted to try to sign up with a broker to put a little money in some speculative uranium stock. It probably doesn't exist now. I have tried a lot of stuff to get rich. Ebay selling, risky pyramid schemes (you get in with a small investment, promise a larger one, but get out once they paid you and never talk to them again - securing the win), looking for goods to import, online gambling, trying to beat casino games, poker, trying to collect and sell stamps, coins and matchbox cars, collecting gem stones, trying to buy jewellery from China and sell it to cash converters for a profit, buying things second hand from the newspaper and reselling them for profit in the same newspaper and playing video games and trying to win competitions to win money lol.

None of those worked very well though. At least I kept trying. I eventually figured out that if you get a job you get money weekly.

I seriously hope you haven't just become interested in stock broking and finance after watching Wolf of Wall Street. If not, then good luck with everything. Study hard at school and go to uni. Diploma's probably aren't worth much to decent size firms unless you know someone.

Just being honest and not softening it up.

Are you still at school?

It is odd that if you have had access and experience on the trading floor day after day, that you would come to an online forum for tips on getting started?

Anywhoo, this forum is a great place and there are many threads that can help begginners to get on the right track.
SirO has a thread for newbies, you will find that will be a great place to start: Newbie Thread.

Good luck on your journey and keep posting!

being lucky my mum worked high up in the bank so I chose to go with her instead of a child minding centre

nah, I found wolf of wall st rather boring, there wasn't enough about wall st it was all drugs and crap. Unfortunately I left school because I had an accident that affected my schooling so I left in 2012 but from my accident I got a hefty trust fund full of composition so I thought id do my diploma with wealth within just to gain information so I can start investing/trading my own funds! not too sure about becoming a stockbroker yet

Here's your big chance to use the search function.
Type <BBG> into the search box and voilà, there is the thread for billabong!
