3D printers are available for purchase right now. I suspect the price will come down, too.

What can you do with a 3D printer?

Here's an example:

Two-year-old Emma was born with a rare disease called arthrogryposis that makes it so she can’t raise her arms without assistance. Through the use of 3D printing, a Delaware hospital created a mobile plastic exoskeleton that now allows Emma to use her arms for many things.


3D printing ensures that a new exoskeleton can be created if Emma breaks or outgrows it. Emma is now on her second 3D-printed jacket and calls the device her “magic arms.”

Yep - there's a vid around of a building 'printed' in something like 20 hrs (or something like that ... can't recall exact details ...)
Will try and dig up the vid tomorrow.

They are like a CNC router in reverse will be able to do any thing even jay leno has of for his massive car collection.
Not sure how they print metal but they are making knee joints, dental prostheses etc

This technology is mind blowing.

There are several methods.

The newest and most advanced make use of material deposition and lasers.

Thus complex parts may be formed, layer-by-layer.

The example of vintage cars, some alloy parts are NLA, these can be economically remade

same as plastic parts.

The applications are endless.

I saw an article recently where they were able to #D print a workable gun.

It's be interesting to see where this tech is in 10 years. It could revolutionise manufacturing as we know it.

There has been a open source version around for about 10 years called a reprap
That could print parts to replicate itself, but only in plastic and very soft metals like soldier..
Cost was about $450US to build it.. Always wanted to but never got around to it..

Same as I always wanted to build a 3axis lathe/router but again never got around to it..

Maybe one day when I have a big enough shed

We have access to a couple of these 3D printers at work. Not sure which ones they are but they are commercially available and do printing via powder (and I think they do pseudo color as well).

It already is and Oz is doing some world class research into this area. IN particular with titanium based materials.

A mate of mine has built one and had a lot of fun. He said the community is very helpful and was quite easy to make one. There are differing levels of kits available.
