ASX 200 Discussion

Being somewhat half busy this morning I missed the early pickup with CHN.
Then it has proceeded to go forward in leaps and bounds.
Not happy about this, is me.

Today
From Market Matters

"A relatively quiet session played out on the ASX today after flat U.S markets overnight, mild Futures this morning and a lack of news on the corporate front providing limited direction for the local bourse. U.S President Donald Trump announced new executive orders to circumvent existing nuclear power legislation, with the aim of quadrupling U.S nuclear energy production by 2050, igniting uranium stocks. Elsewhere, the action was muted, with tech and the big four banks offsetting weakness in commodities as the index traded in a ~25pt range from the open through to the close.

  • The ASX200 rose +12pts/+0.15% closing at 8360
  • IT (+1.13%), Energy (+1.04%) and Real Estate (+0.76%) the winners on the day.
  • Industrials (-0.97%), Materials (-0.65%) and Industrials (-0.26%) weighed.
  • U.S President Donald Trump signed executive orders to speed up investment in nuclear energy to upgrade nuclear electric capacity from 100 to 400 gigawatts by 2050 – Boss Energy (BOE) +12.11%, Paladin Energy (PDN) +6.65% and Deep Yellow (DYL) +8.26% jumped on the news."

Hope you weren't too short term with the CDA position. Almost a four year weekly close high today. Obvious needs a lot of confirmation, such is the treachery of the CDA chart. Default weekly momentum indicators I use look a hope - MACD

Valuations Are Not Cheap

The S&P/ASX 200 price-to-earnings ratio is back up to 18.5x, according to Macquarie.

This is only 0.3x shy of the November 2024 peak of 18.8x.

The analysts note that non-recessionary bear markets have typically seen PEs bottom around 13-15x, and tend to stay lower for longer.

In the US, the S&P 500 PE has also risen to 21.6x, which is close to its late 2024 high.

“While high valuations are not a catalyst in themselves for weaker returns, the higher starting point does make a bullish outlook harder, especially given the prospect of weaker growth after the tariff pauses end,” says the report.

all very interesting , but , is the reason why P/E ratios bulging out because ( share ) prices are rising or earnings are shrinking ?

( i suspect the latter )

Today from
Market Matters

"The direction of least resistance remains on the upside, with the ASX adding another 0.5% in what should have been a quiet day of trade. No noise (from Trump) is good noise, though it seems when noise does come out, the market is digesting it much better, on the expectation it will ultimately get diluted. Our premise going into and through the tariff meltdown was that this was a strategy rather than a policy, which is proving to be the case, though the market is becoming complacent as it trades only ~250pts below it’s all-time high.

  • The ASX200 added +46pts/0.56% to 8407
  • IT (+1.24%), Financials (+1.1%) and Healthcare (+0.90%) outperformed.
  • Property (-0.38%), Communications (-0.28%) and Consumer Staples (-0.26%) trailed the market.
  • China’s industrial firms saw their profits increase at a faster pace in April, as a government trade-in program drove demand for manufactured products in the face of pressure from higher US tariffs.
  • Industrial profits added +3% last month from a year earlier, stronger than a 2.6% gain in March.
  • Copper stocks a standout on speculation that Mac Copper (MAC) is about to be bid for. Capstone (CSC) +6.72% and Sandfire Resources (SFR) +3.09%, although SFR came off early highs at ~$11.60"

Today! (at night)
Market Matters

"The local market edged higher today after opening mildly weaker, lifted by strength in energy and tech stocks. A strong result from Nvidia pre-market sparked bullish sentiment toward AI enabling a +1.9% jump in NASDAQ futures, while the U.S Court of International Trade ruled against the Trump-imposed tariffs, fuelling ~30pt lift on the ASX mid-morning. The President has already appealed and will undoubtedly fight hard to reverse the decision, though for now, investors are latching onto positivity, as the path of least resistance remains up.

  • The ASX200 rose +12pts/+0.15% closing at 8409.
  • Energy (+1.33%), IT (+0.84%) and Communications (+0.60%) in the winner’s circle.
  • Real Estate (-0.95%), Materials (-0.41%) and Consumer Staples (-0.29%) dragged.
  • Woodside Energy (WDS) +2.76% was up on higher oil prices whilst securing a win for Australian gas, extending the nation’s biggest gas export plant, the North West Shelf project through to 2070."

that might be a long debate , some tables take into consideration cross-trades , and Chi-X ( or whatever it is now ) trades

even my two trading platforms disagree regularly and either can lag by several minutes ( when supposedly 'real time ' )

even 'final prices ' might not be the prices after the closing auction

Thanks Mate, but that's not my Point, these are Clearly NOT ASX 200 Stocks & i only discovered this because i mainly only deal in the 200 & was going through the figures to see if there may be stocks trading at or near my buy range!

@ShareSuccess got to admit I've never checked; I've just uncritically presented the league table that Market Matters supplies. They get it from Bloomberg and probably don't check either. I'm pretty sure there are no small or small/medium caps in there anyway.
I've only looked at one on your list, Centuria Capital (CNI) and google and CommSec seem to be confirming CNI is in the ASX 200?
Edit: likewise, JDO looks to be included. BOE also?

according to Commsec

the top 200 ( XJO ) is only a ranking by market capitalization , and no guide on company soundness nor profitability

i learned that during the Linc Energy saga

all it means is that a lot of theoretical money is in each of those companies

now the issue gets murky if a said company is listed on multiple exchanges ( i think each exchange capitalization is treated in isolation but double-check that )
@ShareSuccess got to admit I've never checked; I've just uncritically presented the league table that Market Matters supplies. They get it from Bloomberg and probably don't check either. I'm pretty sure there are no small or small/medium caps in there anyway.
I've only looked at one on your list, Centuria Capital (CNI) and google and CommSec seem to be confirming CNI is in the ASX 200?
Edit: likewise, JDO looks to be included?
can get a bit fuzzy when it is index re-balancing time and M&A activity throws in some curve-balls as well from time to time ( like when COL was demerged )

but i noticed some very unattractive shares manage to find their way into the XJO particularly during the Buy-Now-Pay-Now craze and during the milk to China fad as well

as longer as members remember the top 200 is about market cap. and NOT about quality of the shares in the index
