Djokovic Saga

I wouldn't characterizing it as that. I would say that it is an expectancy of consistency in the court system, rather than ministerial discretion for political purposes straight out of left field.
The Minister had a lawful power to exercise discretion so long as it was rational.
This power exists independent of the court system.
All the court system allowed was an appeal .

Your idea that it was out of left field is baseless as it was clear upon Djokorvics arrival that Border Force needed only determine his vaccination status in order to deport him. That's exactly what they did , but they acted with undue haste and denied Djokorvic fairness by the actions.

Rational seems to be a very subjective assessment. The assessment that djokovic may have caused anti-vax sentiment is not rational in my opinion, even bearing in mind the political motivation. This is borne out by the subsequent court decisions, objective vs subjective.

In any case the law of unintended consequences seems to have been invoked.

Australian miner Rio Tinto’s plans to build a new lithium project have been thrown into disarray after Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic revoked the company’s exploration and mining licences: Tactical nuclear strike
That the licence would be revoked has been on the cards for quite some time, long before the Joker saga arose. They were under extreme pressure from environmentalists.

Shares in Rio Tinto tumbled on Friday after Serbia revoked its lithium exploration licences over environmental concerns, dealing a blow to the Anglo-Australian miner's ambition to become Europe's largest supplier of the metal used in electric vehicles.

The move by Serbia comes as the country approaches a general election in April, and as relations between Belgrade and Canberra have soured after Sunday's high-profile deportation of tennis star Novak Djokovic from Australia https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/s...fight-australian-deportation-court-2022-01-14 over the latter's COVID-19 entry rules.

The decision is a major setback for Rio RIO.L (RIO) , which was hoping the project would help make it one of the world's 10 biggest producers of the lithium, a key ingredient in batteries and much in demand in the electric vehicle boom.

The mine in the Jadar Valley in western Serbia was scheduled to start production in 2027.

Rio's shares fell as much as 3.8% in the Australian stock market, its worst intra-day drop since Sep. 20, 2021. The benchmark index was down 1.5% at 0141 GMT.

Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said in a news conference in Belgrade that the government's decision came after requests by various green groups to halt the $2.4 billion Jadar lithium project.

Rio said it was "extremely concerned" by Serbia's decision and was reviewing the legal basis for it.

"The level of opposition to it (Jadar) has really ratcheted up over the last six months," said Credit Suisse analyst Saul Kavonic.

"We've been highlighting for a while now there would be about $2 a share at risk if the (Serbian) government cancels it," Kavonic said.

Thousands of people blocked roads https://www.reuters.com/markets/com...a-scraps-plan-lithium-mine-project-2021-12-16 last year in protest against the government's backing of the project, demanding Rio Tinto leave the country and forcing the local municipality to scrap a plan to allocate land for the facility.

Earlier this week, Rio had pushed back the timeline for first production from Jadar by one year to 2027, citing delays in key approvals.

LITHIUM SUPPLY At full capacity, the Jadar mine was expected to produce 58,000 tonnes of refined battery-grade lithium carbonate per year, making it Europe's biggest lithium mine by output.

Rio Tinto said last year that it would buy the Rincon lithium project https://www.reuters.com/business/ri...argentina-825-mln-2021-12-21/#:~:text=Dec 21 (Reuters)%20-%20Rio,builds%20its%20battery%20materials%20business in Argentina for $825 million as it looks to build its battery materials business.

Europe and North America are talking about EV supply chains and raw material supply chains from the macro point of view, but on the ground, there’s opposition at the local level to projects, said Sam Brodovcky, Standard Chartered's head of global metals and mining M&A.

"This highlights that there will be an even greater shortage of lithium and other critical and battery materials," said Brodovcky.

"There aren't that many projects like Jadar, and the Western world is not going to have its own supply chain if these are not developed. There's a disconnect between saying, 'We want to compete with China in building our own supply chains,' if you don't do the projects," Brodovcky said.

Experts said the world's shortage of lithium had been forecast to last for another three years at least, but with the cancellation of the Jadar project, the shortfall will now last for several years.

"We're at the point now where lithium supply is going to set the pace of electric vehicle rollout," Kavonic said. ((praveen.menon@thomsonreuters.com; +6448028163; Reuters Messaging: praveen.menon.thomsonreuters.com@reuters.net; Twitter: https://twitter.com/Journopraveen))

It helped the decision. He can now pander to greenies and nationalists in one move. This move by Australia sealed its fate.

Australia is already dealing with reputation damage from Chinese propaganda. This juvenile sht is like adding fuel to the fire.

Omicron is already here ffs. The double vax does nothing to slow the spread. It's fcking stupidity. States like Vic or NSW shouldn't be dying on that hill.

Kelly slater is the next one getting banned.

Haven't you heard that it greatly reduces the risk of death and hospitalisation, particularly after the booster, which requires a double vax to begin with. Nothing stupid about that, except those who do not heed the advice.

Vaccines are proven effective to mitigate death and serious illness so any decision to act against a person who does not support this stance has an objective basis.
I have no idea why you mention a "political motivation" as it was made clear to Tennis Australia that arriving players had to be vaccinated.
The intended consequences are clear cut: get vaccinated or don't come.

There are a few points I would like to bring up there, but firstly, define vaccinated.

For delta

84% wanted him deported, I guess people are fed up and vented on Djokovic, the Govt is damned if it does or if it doesnt.
No point in losing sleep over it, most are happy, I know my 90 year old MIL was over the moon with the decission.
To me it just highlights how lost common sense is these days.

I already posted that.

It didn't seem to align what you think it means and I can't see why you started using it anyway.
It is a term invented by the right, which the left seem to have problems interpreting.

If you are of the left, you already cannot understand.

This is very obvious across several platforms ;)

My reading of the definition is that it applies to privileged white women who complain about members of minority groups invading their space or otherwise offending their Conservative sensibilities.

I hardly think the 'Right' would poke fun at their own so it seems some of your synapses have a short circuit or you are using the wrong term.

Kindly give us your definition.

The government made a spectacle of it. That was the main problem.
Realistically it was idiots in the media making it political.
Fck the media those dmbshts were always going to blow it up. The worse thing is they just walk away like no damage is done. We have had an ongoing scare campaign and US level bs being sprouted.

But let's face it. What was the risk?
There was none except idiot backlash in an election year. So I shouldn't really point a finger at the government as it's the masses of morons in the general public.

You are way out if touch. It is very much for Omicron too. Look it up.
Yes I know the studies. 67 or whatever % that's the figures thrown at us. But it drops to 45% after 6 months and a lot of people are well past that point.
Honestly I think it's a lot lower for at risk groups.
Third dose is supposed to give a much better protection. But drops as well. At what point does the risks from the vax outweigh the benefits to certain age groups.

I'm pro vax. I think it's important against Covid-19 and delta.
But I'm going to question everything. And it's plain to see we are being fed sht with a lot of what is and isn't legit. And that's "all" arguments around covid.

A lot of what they told us ended up being bs measures. But adding a level of medical apartheid because somehow it "keeps us safe"?
And the supposed "safety" measures put in place. A lot had no scientific basis.

I just think we are gearing up to be just as divisive as the US. You can already see it brewing.

90%+ of Australia is vaccinated and it still ran through. Israel on its 4th shot and leading the world (or thereabouts) in infections. At what point should I be questioning what's going on?

I don't get your point. Do you think vaccines must be perfect the day the are released and should be effective not only against the current strain, but all future strains? That's certainly not how it works with any vaccine that we have had to date.

And a lot aren't, so it is not stupid for those to get double vaxed if they are not already and boosted if they are. If many people are already 6 months beyond being double vaxed or boosted what are you saying is stupid?

If vaccination gives you 6 months of better protection from severe illness or death, then it is a no brainer.

I think it's important against Covid-19 and delta.

And against Omicron if it gives you 6 months of better protection from severe illness or death. Do you think that is not important?

A point that is no where near. And there will be new and better vaccines to come. That's the way it has always been.

90%+ of Australia is vaccinated and it still ran through.

But hospitalisations and deaths of those vaccinated were much lower than for those unvaccinated, which makes vaccination anything but stupid.

What is stupid is those who know the statistics still refusing to get vaccinated because they read some crap on the internet.

I don't get your point.
Point was: blocking people because they are not vaccinated is stupid. Especially if the are young and fit. Blocking djokovic was a political/punitive move and you are an idiot if you thought it would protect from some kind of covid risk.

There would be a lot of people at the end of their protection when it came to the vaccination.
Australia is flooded with cases anyway. Vaccination at two doses does not stop spreading it to any significant degree after time.
And at risk groups are the only ones that should be chewing up the boosters.
Post treatments available now.

I think this bs of unvaccinated being falsely labelled as having a high % risk of dying as laughable. It does not kill or hospitalise the vast majority of the population. Omicron is even less than what delta and c19 was. And 90%+ vax and everyone still pi$sing themselves.

So yes I think the whole thing is brainwashed stupidity from an idiotic media and an even dumber government.
