Working Overseas

I currently work in the finance industry in Australia in a back office role and I am looking to move overseas to either the UK or New York. I feel it’s the next step to take to move out of home and see the real world on my own. I am 22 and have completed a diploma, degree and grad certificate in business/finance but I am not sure if this means much to employers overseas.

I have done a lot of looking into the UK which seems like a good step as I can get a longer ancestry visa which would be an advantage. The one that I am having trouble with is New York, there is a lot of info out there on working in the UK but not much in New York.

I was wondering with what I am looking to do can anyone provide any tips or advice?

In the UK they will focus on your experience... they'll note your education, but really focus on experience.

I was in your boots 2 years ago (although, IT industry).

Working in the City would obviously be where you're going to earn the most cash, but don't write off Edinburgh either. Much smaller than London, but punches well above its weight as HBOS and RBS are HQ'd there, along with Standard Life, and many other fund managers - always loads of jobs up there and it's dramatically cheaper to live there than London - and best thing is Edinburgh's own airport is going through an 'easyjet renaissance' (more and more routes every couple of months) so you can buggar off to the continent more frequently and combined with Glasgow International and Glasgow Prestwick, you've got roughly the same choice of travel destination as you would from Stansted/Luton down in London.

It was relatively simple for me as I'm a dual citizen (born in Melbourne, dad born in Edinburgh), you should be ok with the ancestry visa, but don't be surprised if they hammer you on it - look at it from the perspective of an employer: they see an AU passport with merely a Visa in it, the employer's no doubt going to factor in the risk of you getting homesick and pissing off home when considering your application/interview. Sad but true - no doubt that's probably the same in the US.

Getting into the States would be pretty hard and tedious I imagine. Since 9/11, they have obviously made it much more difficult to get any kind of working visas. I knew of a bloke who was living in the UK who wanted to go and work in New York (his partner was American). He had to fly over at least 4 or 5 times for different interviews, extended interviews etc etc. Cost him a lot of money. A lot of last minute stuff too "you'll need to be here in 2 days" etc).

He did get there in the end though.

Thanks guys, I have been looking into it more over the last few days and it seems a very difficult task. I think the UK might be the go as it looks like moving to the USA can be very expensive. I think I might give the UK ago and see where that leads

Good move IMO.

Aussies are popular as employees over there because of our work ethic. In addition to tayser's comments about experience etc., add attitude.

Generally we have a superior attitude to work & business than a lot of Poms, so that scores points too.

Whoahhh there laddie!!! I'm all for constructive criticism of my homeland and know the areas where we're lacking. However, Aussies claiming that they have a superior work ethic to Brits is really so way off the mark its untrue.

At best for you, we're as bad as each other. Although, I've certainly not seen anything since I've been here in Oz to suggest you're a harder working mob.

I have noticed differences in work ethics of different Aussile cultures though...but lets not go there.

While my experiences have a certain congruence with your views, anecdotally, Aussies are renowned in the UK for their work ethic. I guess the Aussies that do lob up in London have their sleeves rolled up and ready to put their nose to the wheel.

I aim to single handedly destroy that perception when I get over there shortly.

Geeeee Wayne...you really had me going there!!

After all of your researched and well thought out posts relating to how screwed the global economy is, I was scratching my head as to how you could be so off the mark with this post.

Now I understand!!!
