Westpac Broking's live feed and Quotetracker

Hi guys,

I've set up Quotetracker to use the feed from Westpac Broking and it seems to work quite well, but I've noticed that at best it seems to update the data in one big lump every 15-20 seconds. While this is acceptable for the time being, I have noticed when watching other trader's live videos on Youtube etc that their data is continually updating (streaming), with many movements a second. Is it possible to get this using Westpac Broking and Quotetracker? If so, how?

Also, I haven't as yet figured out how to set up Quotetracker to actually trade using Westpac (it isn't available in the dropdown list on the trading tab in settings), so if I want to make any trades I have to login to the Westpac Broking website (and close Quotetracker, as the website doesn't seem to want to allow two concurrent connections and they keep closing each other's session)... obviously this isn't ideal. Is it possible to configure Quotetracker to use Westpac or is this just not something that either QT or WB support?

On a different note, I was considering switching to Interactive Brokers as their brokerage/commissions are substantially lower. Any downsides to this? Is their feed also be substantially better in terms of streaming data? I'm a beginner when it comes to trading platforms so any advice would be appreciated.

You'll probably find that westpac has snapshot quotes instead of streaming. I have run it through comsec before and only got updates every 15-20 seconds too. Sanford used to be much better, but alas, aren't around anymore

I don't think you can set up QT to trade with any of the OZ brokers.

In regards to running QT and having westpac's website open, I had a look at the old QT boards, and there has been discussion about this, though the software gurus over there didn't mention what the workaround was in public(though there was a workaround).

Since QT was bought out, they have discontinued the support board, so you can't ask any questions there now, but there is another forum you can go and ask about this issue if you want(or alternatively email support)-

In regards to IB, yes it's a streaming data feed, and it works well with QT, I have it up and running every day and wouldn't be without it. You can set up QT to trade with IB, but I'd personally either use IB's platform, or go and get some dedicated order entry software to use instead, it's much better(especially for intraday trading)

You'll have to pay more to get streaming. ComSec Protrader or perhaps the one that should not be promoted.
Even those arent great IMO

You could try going to a 5sec interval but your bandwidth usage will be huge.
 
been using quotetracker with westpac and commsec for a while now
can only log on once to westpac set update to 5 sec
and trade through commsec i have registered qt and
find it great cannot send orders through,
if wanting better data update etc for daytrading etc go to ib brokers
 
Sanford are still around, but in the guise of Bankwest online trading and NAB online trading. Same website, except with the NAB logo at the top. Not sure if they still offer this streaming service though; never used it myself.

Why would the bandwidth usage be huge? Surely not that much data gets transfered with 5 second intervals? Besides, wouldn't the same amount of actual data be transfered, just in shorter intervals?

Also.. the one that should not be promoted? E*Trade? Or am I on the wrong track there? I gather from the other posters that IB might be a good way to go though.
 
Quotetracker is not a live streaming data provider.

It works by logging into your brokers website (WBC) and "scrapping" the data. ie it looks up each symbol and records the price / volume etc and then saves this info. It is a snapshot in time.

If you set QT at 5sec it will download each and every symbol every 5sec. This is a large amount of data and web traffic to the retail Broker website.

The brokers soon get jack of users using it this way.
 
I loaded QT last week and unfortunately have not been home during the trading hours for all this week to veiw in action.

I have done refresh after hours and it looks very good

QT portfolio provides much more data for my portfolio which combines Wespac Broking data covered by their separate forms "Holdings", Detail Quote" and "Watchlist" plus other forms

You can sort your portfolio for "ALL" the columns that you include.
-- profit/loss for the day
-- trades, ask and bids
-- gain/loss, high/low, symbol
-- the QT portfolio form includes the various index summaries ASX 20, ASX 50, ASX 100 etc.

Includes ASX daily announcements by clicking on symbol; has anyone been able to get newspaper articles for their stocks. I set up http://au.yahoo.com

I would love to get the 52 week high and low data included; but looks like this is not possible!

Are there any QuoteTracker users that have been able to connect to Westpac Broking today?

Westpac Broking Revised Website Was Implemented Today.

Today I am unable to connect QuoteTracker to Westpac which does all the great things that Westpac Broking does not do.

If your trading systems need high quality, reliable data then you should consider paying for it with data vendors who run an honest reputable business to provide this data for you.

However, you need to consider whether your trading system actually requires intraday data. Why not look at your trading systems and see what happens to your previous trades if you weren't able to enter intraday and could only trade on, say, tomorrow's open or tomorrow's close. You may well find that medium-term-trade-length trading systems actually only need end-of-day data (i.e. they perform better) - thus you have removed yourself from being glued to the screen and improved your results.

Personally I know of lots of successful medium-long term traders. I only know of a handful of successful intrday traders that have been active.

PS - If you decide intraday data is required then check that your intraday data is adjusted. No point looking at unadjusted data and making bad trading decisions on those few days a year that a corporate action causes you to falsely enter a trade.
 
I have now setup QT using the source "ASX Australia (Delayed)".

This worked and last night I updated my QT portfolio (created by me) using the "ASX Australia" source and reconciled my QT with my Westpac Portfolio.

There was one Westpac error where the Westpac purchase cost was wrong and reported at 80 cents and should have been 40 cents.

There are two other sources "Yahoo Australia (Delayed)" and a "StockWatch (Delayed)

I will not know how long the delay is until tomorrow!
 

There is a 20 minute delay for "ASX Australia (Delayed)"
--- also does not include the number of trades in the metrics
 
It sucks that I cannot use my Westpac account with QT because this is a great program. Is there any other similar free program that would be able to feed from Westpac?
