Time and place is everything.  What is considered heroism, genius, proactivity will be punished harshly in another context, and vice versa in the opposite direction.  Pretty sure all the main strategies for trading were profitable somewhere and sometime.  There's very few absolutes in human affairs.  It's usually thought of as being a slow change, but many times it's abrupt - consider you're a Russian royal; one day the world is at your feet, then the Commies take over and being royal is suddenly, effectively, a death sentence.
