"Both sides accused each other and said they acted in self-defence."

ABC Version as to WHY

-----> "Cambodia had fired heavy weapons into Thailand without any specific targets, resulting in civilian deaths."
This is the Bit I Mr UMike doesn't get.

Truth is this is not a civilian issue...... More Elites playing games that will affect and start a Civilian issue.
This is a high level (Corruption) manipulation of the masses.

minor quibble ... designating the border, you could have named it
Thai-Khmer, or Thailand-Cambodia

.. from X:
According to Royal Thai Army Intelligence, 24 Cambodians, most with the Royal Cambodian Army, are believed to have been killed so far during the ongoing cross-border clashes, with most casualties occurring near Ta Muen Thom Temple. In a report from the Second Army Region, dated from between July 24-25, the Cambodian Army suffered losses in the area near the Ta Muen Thom Temple, including 4 soldiers, 4 civilians, and a monk. Aircraft with the Royal Thai Air Force attacked the Headquarters of 8th, 9th, and 42nd Divisions of the Cambodian Army. Drones attacked Khao Makuea, destroying an arms depot, and a signal tower. Artillery attacked several tanks opposite Khao Makuea, where 14 Cambodian soldiers were killed by drone bombings, totaling 23. Earlier this morning, July 25, artillery with the Royal Thai Army attacked opposite Chong Bok, destroying 3 x 100mm mortars. One Cambodian soldier was killed in the attack, bringing the total number of Cambodians killed so far during the conflict to 24.

... Chong Bok is up near the tri-point of Laos-Thailand-Cambodia.

And i went to Ta Muen Thom, a long time ago - refer Travel thread, post #79.

that road , through Surin, SisaKet and Ubon Ratchathani, was built late 70s / early 80s as a defensive line, in from the (then) Kampuchea border. Before then, the provinces were a bit of a backwater.

It became very useful for the Pol Potists to slip along and pop up to harry the Viet forces after DK overthrow in 1979-82

The Dangrek scarp runs along the northern Cambodian border for several hundred km. The border, in dispute, should follow the watershed; but has always been contested. Thai holds the upper ground and the scarp drops away to the Tonle Sap plains in the south

Preah Vihear was the site of a shameful episode in 1979 when Thai Army trucked thousands of Khmer to the site and forced them over the cliff. Many died.

With curremt tensions/ fighting, there are pix of the Thai flag on the mountain near Sao Thong Chai, Cambodia ... itself just down the road from Preah Vihear. as of today.

Update Thai soldiers reclaim Phu Makua after repelling Cambodian assaults

Thai troops successfully repelled a pre-dawn assault by Cambodian forces on Phu Makua, a strategic highland in Si Sa Ket province, and took control of the area.
The confrontation reignited early Saturday, following a Thai operation to regain the border hilltop in the northeastern border province around 6.50pm on Friday.
At 3.30am on Saturday, Cambodian troops launched a renewed offensive to retake Phu Makua. The incursion was forcefully pushed back, according to the "RTATrend" Facebook page.
By 8.45am, the Thai army confirmed that Phu Makua had been secured, sharing photos of soldiers raising the national flag and singing the national anthem. The message highlighted Thailand’s stance on sovereignty: “Our sovereignty will not be trampled upon.”
The Second Army Region also posted a photo of the flag on Phu Makua, confirming the successful operation.

This is a high level (Corruption) manipulation ..
on that matter:
On Sunday, the Royal Thai Army targeted the Saitaku Resort and Casino near the Chupkoki-Chong Saitaku Border Crossing in Northern Cambodia, which was being used as a temporary outpost by the Cambodian Army to fire artillery and rockets against locations in Thailand.

There have been a proliferation of casinos along the Cambodian side of the border in what were contested areas for quite a while - Initially; whose money, which local governments benefited? Second point: who didn't pay who to keep the army out, and then stop the other guys shelling them?

Pretty sure Hun Sen Overstepped his mark.
Thai Military keeping the Shinawatras' in Check?
