Roy Jones Jr. is the 40 y.o. legend of good ol' U.S.A. in Oz for a world title fight on Wednesday at 6.00 p.m in Sydney against 36 y.o. West Aussie Danny Green.

After watching 5 of Jones' fights tonight, one of which he lost to Antonio Tarver, I was impressed by the way he remains confident throughout the bouts. Style wise his left is like a rattlesnake, loaded with venom and strikes with deadly accuracy. The right, well potent too when the opponent walks into them. But it's the left that breaks the opponent down. In clinches and on the ropes, left hook to the body hook to the head and right uppercuts did the most damage.

Jones made the other boxers, except for Tarver, look like their arms were too short. And speed? One three punch combination, left hook to the body and left/right to the head was like about a second in time.

This Wednesday, don't miss it.

Stick ya cash on Green , its just a shoo in fight for contension for bigger mouthed fish .............

Have seen a few green fights over the last couple of years - was particularly interested when I lived in WA. No one would doubt green punching power. If he lands some clean shots he will definitely hurt Jones Jr. As aboxing fan though, a few things worry me (from a green supporter point of view)
1. Green has never fought anyone remotely of Jones's pedigree. He has fought some great fighters and some quick fighters. But Jones has speed and knockout power should he connect.
2. IMHO green has not been the same fighter since getting DQ'd against Markus Beyer in 03. An interesting note on this is that Green hit Beyer so hard and so many times it took the german 12 months to heal fully from his wounds. It was almost painful to watch, and ever so nearly ended Beyer's career. I have been waiting for that green to turn up again. So far though it's been a no show...
3. Jones has beaten some great fighters and had been, at one point in his career, the pound for pound greatest.
4. Jones is stupidly fast and hits very very hard. As they say, your power is the last thing to go. Expect Jones to still be able to hurt people.


On the positive side, Green is back at his preferred weight. I said it at the time, that dropping weight to fight mundine was a huge mistake. Your power, speed and endurance all suffer badly when you shed kg's. Expect Green to have plenty of power.

I am not concerned about Green's ability to take punishment. His head is a concrete block and he'spretty hard to hurt.

Go Green. Have got it ordered.

It's tough judging Jones these days, some times he turns up, others he doesn't. Not like his pre-heavyweight days, where he showed up everytime.

If he is even in decent shape, he will pick Green apart, just like Mundine did.

Green always has a punchers chance though, but that's about it, skill wise, he is a hype job by the Australian media more than anything else.

This fight is NOT a world title fight either, it is a sham of a belt, nobody sees Green as the Cruiser champion, not even close.

Either way, I will be ringside for this one.

And that will be the probable scenario. Green will put on a show for the viewers and go the distance. Jones will tag Green more often to win by unanimous decision. Too predictable.

Roy Jones Jnr even at the ripe age of 40 will teach Green a lesson that not even Mundine could not... Smart money is on Roy...

Tonight he didn't turn up. I was saddened to watch this super sportsman go down.

Yeh, that was a clear no show by Roy, just like his first fight with Tarver, his 3rd fight with Tarver, his fight with Calzaghe and his one with Glen Johnson.

One of the most gifted athletes to ever walk on the planet, sad to see him go, but good to stand side by side with him last night, I'm surprised at how small he was.
 
This fight highlights everything wrong with boxing now imo.

A fighter well past his best fighting another fighter probably also past his best or at least close to it, fighting for a weak "world title" belt that no one really cares about.

The problem with boxing is the best fighters rarely fight each other anymore and rarely when they are both in their prime. The fact this fight was such a big thing is actually quite sad for boxing in general.

Roy Jones in his prime was an unbelievable boxer and at 40 is still probably better then most but he is only a shodow of what he used to be.

Actually I disagree nomore.

All the big names have matched up in recent times, Calzaghe, Taylor V BHOP, Jones V Tarver, Pac V Cotto, Morales, Barerra, De La Hoya, Hatton, Mayweather V many of those same names, Mosley V Margarito.

Far different from several years back when guys like BHOP would just sit in an empty middleweight division, defending titles that don't matter, because the contenders are tomatoe cans.

As for facing eachother past their primes, this happens, it's simply mother time. Ray Robinson fought a past it Henry Armstrong, Marciano a washed up Joe Louis and Archie Moore, even Hagler and Leonard were both shells of themselves when they finally met in the ring. Ali was well past it once he got to Frazier, Foreman, not near the same mover in the ring as the Ali that was fighting before the war 'semi retirement', the one who touched up Sonny Liston like a nobody.

Boxing is in extremelly strong condition at the moment to me, as witnessed by what I just mentioned and the raw numbers that major fights are being watched by these days.
 
I thought Pacquiao v De La Hoya was very one sided.
De La Hoya was obviously on the way down, but it doesn't take away from Manny's skill.

Personally would like to see Mayweather v Pacquiao - but there is so much on the line, its doubtful if a match can be setup imo

Yeh, this is THE fight. I can't see this not happening. It has to happen, the entire boxing world is pushing for it. Will just take the normal push/pull of negotiations to see who gets the larger pot for the fight, both men think they deserve it, but will probably end up 50/50 or 60/40 to the winner.

Got no idea who would win it though, probably slight edge to Mayweather I think. Pac struggled a lot with Marquez, a great counter-puncher, and Mayweather is basically a bigger, better version of Marquez.

While on recent contests, the Pacquiao V Hatton, it looked a different Hatton to the one that mauled Kostya Tszyu years earlier when Kostya was 35. Or is just that Pacquiao is in the unbeatable class?

Yeh, it's hard to say. This is the tough part about boxing, Hatton could take the shot of Tszyu, but Mayweather a far smaller puncher, could knock him out. Though it was probably that he was hit a lot cleaner by Mayweather and a lot more throughout the night. A lot of times, once a fighter gets knocked out, their chin is shot and they go down a lot easier there after. Which could explain why Hatton wobbled everytime Pac touched him.
