Joining an index fund?

I'm interested in putting some money into an index fund. They seem to be the standard fare for newbs like me; either that or mutual funds.

However, I cant seem to work out how to join an index fund.

Let's say I would like to join a fund that tracks the All Ords or the S&P/ASX500. Where can I find such funds, and how do I join them?

I've been reading around on sites like the ASX hompage, MorningStar, Investopedia, and ETrade, and while I've found information describing index funds, they dont seem to have any info on how to actually join. Maybe I'm just blind though...

Also, can I put regular money into index funds to add to the principle over time, like mutual funds?
