Hey there,

I've been trading for about two months and I've got a question in relation to ex-dividend dates.

I've noticed that the ex-dividend date varies between what Commsec says in the 'dividend' section under 'company research' and what the actual earnings reports show.

Two recent examples I've noticed are AMP and Wesfarmers. For AMP, Commsec said the exdividend was 27 feb, whereas their report says 2 March. For Wesfarmers, Commsec said the ex-dividend was the 21 feb, whereas the report says the 27th.

Is there something I'm missing or not looking at properly? has commsec (or the company that does their company research page) filled this dates incorrectly?

any help will be appreciated

That's an easy one. Ex dividend means that, that is the day you will no longer be entitled to that dividend, simple as that, ex mean ex, not entitled. What you might be seeing on the reports is the record date. The record date is not of any meaning other than being on the the record at a prescribed time.

If it comes to getting paid for a dividend then only one date matters, that is the ex dividend date. Buy on that date and you miss out, buy before that date and you get it.

Cheers.

also those 2 dates, company usually report recorded date which is 3 days from Ex-date
or 4 days from Transaction date (business day)
