I'm lucky, I get offered coffee at most my stops and I've quickly worked out who buys decent stuff. Haven't bought a coffee for yonks

i remember years back , there were some using roasted dandelion root as a coffee substitute ( a caffeine-free one , of course )
I remember my dear old mum buying dandelion syrup as a coffee substitute ages ago, came in a bottle but was soon vanquished and never to be seen again. I still remember the look on dad's face the first time he tasted it, priceless.

Dandelion coffee substitute is still around I see, like this one.

If you like coffee and have a small amount of spare time, buy a small batch roaster and a reasonably good espresso machine.
Genecafe roaster is about $850, breville espresso you can get for about $700 for a single boiler with built in grinder.
Green beans are about $20/kg and will last for up to 3 years in storage so you can have different types.

It's not an insignificant upfront cost, but if you consider the price of a coffee bought in a shop and say you buy one every day, this pays for itself inside 12 months.
Well worth the investment IMO, I'm not going back.

I buy my coffee online, found a great bean at a very good price. Confirmed recently when I was browsing a couple of coffee roasters, OMG, there was prices all the way to $85kg.

My supplier charges $30 per kg, freshly roasted and I have been buying it exclusively for the past 4 years.

I use Coffee Snobs in Geelong (VIC). They are awesome. Average used to be about $14/kg for green but wholesale prices have rocketed over the last year

Good coffee too, @qldfrog
Interesting, I am in France for a couple of months and although I took a few kilos of my coffee, I have had to source some here! Went to Voiron and visited a roaster there, their retail price was less than what I charge my commercial customers!

Stay safe, and enjoy your stay
I am no fan of french coffee in general being a white coffee guy.
Cafe au lait is an ok drink but can not be called coffee, and the traditional small black on the bar counter more an emergency shock treatment than a pleasure trip.
Price wise, in cafe, ok cappuccino a year ago were similar to us, not sure now
