If you look at one of my previous posts,I did say how fish should be killed more humanely,so dont lump me with your own projection.

Maybe animals eat feed, but they provide not only meat but also leather, and other valuable products, such as fertilizers, where will these things come from? More plants needing more water. My point still stands should one year the plants fail, there would be no alternative.Look at the banana situation or the sugar problem, one a natural disaster the other a bug.Anyway as I`ve said before if people just left the Japanese alone, they would probably lose interest in killing whales.

Again Your statement beggars more study on the subject
Please do not take offence. It is not my intention I am sure you are a caring human being. But It is actually a WASTE of resources to grow livestock. I would be here a while to explain it all to you and I dislike typing. So please read up on the subject. It is interesting and enlightening.

I think this is an interesting idea one worth a thought and debate.
But they have always done it (harpooning) It is barbaric and why should anyone sit aside and watch another AMAZING creature/being be slaughtered in the name of 'tradition' while they "get over it". There are no simple answers when arguing the grey areas just one truth and that is that these animals ARE dying LENGTHY PAINFUL MOURNFUL DEATHS.
And if people want to get out there and do something about it then more power to them!
    and yes the media SUCK.

Ants, when I wrote that I meant it in reference to the fact that the Japanese are in fact storing the meat, not only that, they are trying to introduce it to school children, presumably to influence their choices later in life.So if people stopped all this pressure probably the practice would`ve already have been in the past.

Bottom line I dont give a F*** about whales and these types of politics....
To me there are bigger problems in our society that need addressing

A little plug for father o riley and his "youth off the streets " programme...now here is someone passionate about making the world a better place and I'd imagine one day of his work is much more beneficial than saving a couple of whales

excuse my potty mouth but "middle class" politics annoy the hell out of me :2twocents

    Wayne ,interesting article,
however lately the media has been paying a lot of attention to China, and the thing that really stikes me is how they just want to be like the rest of the western world, well they keep mentioning America and the choices available to Americans.A lot of these problems are brought about by people wanting to be alike, logic doesnt seem to come into the argument really.Imagine if logic played a part in people decision making, obesity would be a self explanatory problem, polution also, instead mention to someone that you have a small car because you really dont need a big car and they will point out ,that to buy a small car costs the same as a family car

In fact in one of the programs a chinese person mentioned having these choices made him unique, and here I was thinking that the chinese were unique,he didnt seem to understand that his choices was making him the same.

Specialties in East Timor are all the three letter animals: cat, rat, bat, and dog. All served at 'special' functions, usually satay style. Not tasty.

In my opinion, the 'humane' killing of animals is just a way to ease our conscience... i.e. i think the term is doctors wives syndrome!

i mean, you are still killing an animal.... you either eat animals or you don't!!!

If we are ok with eating animals, which I am, then i think in Oz, we should all eat Kangaroos, they don't need 'feed' as in grain, they just eat the wild grasses!!!

Other option is the wild / or game meat...

    very tasty too....

this cattle issues you raise in the article wayne, is the more the result of 'commercial' harvesting of cows for beef!

Hey, do you know what "annoys the hell out of me"? It's people who respond to an argument or discussion with a statement such as "Who cares about problem A? Problem B is much worse!" :)

The logical conclusion to this mode of thinking is that only one problem at a time would be addressed by mankind - even assuming that everyone could agree on which problem was the worst! The fact is, there are six billion of us on this planet, so surely it's better for everyone if people divide their attention and address the problems that they each, individually, think are worthwhile? (I think this is called a "market".)

If you really think that the problem of whaling is not worth addressing, then give your reasons. But just interrupting a discussion to point out another problem that you think is more worthwhile doesn't really help.

    Regards, Staybaker. :)

Just remembered, off topic, but still on killing.

Somebody ‘smart’ came up with an argument against draconian measures against polio, malaria, tuberculosis and all other types of bacteria and viruses.

Very crafty argument, as animals, plants and everything else is part of our eco system.

If we successfully kill the influenza, we might also kill chance of good seasonal workout for our immune system.

Looks that saying: ‘killing two birds with one stone’ can be applied to aquatic life too,

And maybe saying is OK for other animals too, as apparently whales originated in water, ventured out on the land and went back to water.
There is some debate going how did the nasal opening go past eyes, but this is different story again.
