I would like to hear peoples thoughts on Japan whaling.

I think its a joke considering it is quite well known that they are having trouble getting rid of the meat in the first place, just dosnt make sence
They are even resorting to feeding it to kids in school and aparently supplying it to hospitals to put on the menu.... Just to get rid of it.
yet they still continue to up the numbers they want to catch/kill.

Are they just trying to keep up a tradition that has died in the a.rse?
    Move with the times!

    Any comments?
I would like to hear from some japanese people on here if possible. Do you eat it? whats your thoughts?

    Good one.

Isn't it funny how we are more emotional over a whale than say a trout?

with a great love of all things oceanic especially sharks and whales, it still perplexes me to see so much commotion about whales being harvested when there are so many people subject to ethnic cleansing, starvation and the like. Hopefully the Japanese might start hunting down Magabi instead..

On another note, it's awe inspiring to be eye to eye with a humpback in 30 metres of water. That's definately somewhere on my top 10 best times. I'm certainly not happy with whaling unless it is to sustain life.

    cheers,

I know we all have to eat, but I don't think we should be eating endangered species.

There are plenty of other things to fill the belly :)

    Hmm
The Japanese would be spoilt for choice on the Gold Coast.
More beached whales there than you can shoot a harpoon at.
I have tried pushing them back out to see, but apparently they "home" on the high rises!

I'm totally opposed to the Japanese and their whaling, particularly the cruel way they allow the creatures to die so slowly from their injuries.

The point about the trout (or any other fish for that matter) is also so true.
I can never understand why so many people think it's OK to haul a fish in, while it struggles with the hook through its mouth. Scientific studies have clearly demonstrated that fish do feel pain. I just can't watch all those fishing TV docos where macho blokes (huh?) revel in the "sport" of a fish fighting them for its life. If bullmarket is right and there's another life after this one, then I hope those fishermen come back as fish!!

It's another example of man's exploitation of other species and the planet in general.

Julia,i`m not sure I agree with your last line, but yes there should be a more humane way of killing fish, some years ago we were walking along St.Kilda pier, thats a very popular pier in Melbourne used for fishing and there were these two fish flapping all about,I cannot tell you how sorry I felt for them,so I pushed them back in. Someone told the man who apparently put them there and he started telling me off,I told him the fish were suffering, his face totally dropped and he stopped talking,I think he thought I was crazy, but I`ve never again wanted to go fishing,

AS for the japanese and the whales,I reckon they would simply stop if everyone stopped paying attention to them, after all its not as if the japanese are even eating the stuff.

Yes Julia thats an example, but you & I still eat certain species from the planet .

I look at it this way, ---as long as I don't eat the more intelligent forms of life , then I can delude myself ~ me  as to my ironcy of my food pref'erences.

Just remember when you go to the butcher shop you are buying pain and death.

Pigs die of electrocution, earmuffs, before they are bled. Lambs die from a gun like prod stuck in their temple, which also electrocutes, and cattle are killed by hitting their foreheads with a hammer gun. All methods that are more effective than a harpoon or a hook.

    But equally as barbaric.

If humans were as intelligent as we thoughtwe were, we would be ashamed of ourselves.

Ants,I dont think that the shame lays in what we eat, rather in how much we produce and store, all the while people are starving or allowed to starve.

Don`t confuse survival with intelligence. Those methods are quite quick and they don`t feel much. Fishing is barbaric as is whaling.
