    Hmm.

Here lies the danger of throwing all our eggs into a Chinese Fortune Cookie basket....

Is this REALLY the dream state we want to tie our economic future to?

And we shake pointy sticks at Iran?? Their recent *riot* toll seems mere chicken feed in comparison. *tsk, tsk*

At least they're rioting. Also consider size - a sneaze in China appears a hurricane to us.

    Make that 156+ deaths now...

OK. Obviously, you are comfortable with that figure. After all, they are just Chinese. So, you must have a number you feel comfortable with?

Care to share what would you define as an *acceptable* number of deaths in China from civil unrest / rioting? 500? 1,000? 10,000?

Ideally, from me that would be a big, fat 0.

However, given the 2,000+ year record of the mostly authoritarian, militaristic, autocratic police state nature of the Chinese political beast - where any sniff of dissent is usually smacked down hard, often with lethal force - I can see that is a tough ask.

Yet, should that prevent anyone like myself who is getting a tad nervous with the speed at which we seem to be chucking all our eggs into the Chinese Fortune Cookie Basket from declaring some disquiet about the oh-so-cosy, rose-coloured, sugar-sweetened relationship our leaders seem keen to foster with the Angry Dragon? At any cost?

Are we becoming wedged between a rock and a very hard place?

    No & probably yes.

Declare as loudly as possible AJ.

It's one thing having Western hegemony taken from us by force, but it's quite another to hand it to the Chinese on a silver platter.

I'm not uncomfortable with anyone dying. I accept our mortality. In a land of 1.3 billion, 156 is not a significant event. It would be similar to a few people dying in an accident here. You might suggest I'm being insensitive, and I might ask why you don't shed a tear for 100,000+ people that die every day.

Easy to say when you don't have to keep 1.3 billion in line.

Actually they are not Han Chinese but a distinct ethnic minority -

Chinese definition of 'Detained' = taken away to be murdered.........

    Ethnic cleansing doesn't exist?

I heard the riots were about religious and ethnic tensions.
Between the Han Chinese vs. some Muslim Chinese.
