Economic implications of a SARS/Coronavirus outbreak

Seems like market across the board is being slaughtered, but what type of businesses would flourish in these situations?

Economic implications of a SARS/Coronavirus outbreak

It's not solely about deaths though, it's more about the disruption that this virus causes, eg. travel bans, store closures/limitations, self quarantines etc.

The state of the economy at the street level

Noticing some more businesses shut shop in Sydney CBD. Sushi shop on Bathurst Street which has been there for at least 5 years, is now closed with a notice on the door saying they have been evicted due to not paying rent. Cherry Beans cafe on corner of Liverpool and Pitt Streets is also closed...

Chinese people are posting / boasting on social media about how they're able to leave quarantined areas despite obviously showing symptoms.

Economic implications of a SARS/Coronavirus outbreak

Actually when it was first discovered, the government was arresting people sharing information about it because they didn't want to cause panic. Also, after knowledge of the virus, the Wuhan government allowed a giant feast to proceed, one where hundreds if not thousands gathered together to eat...

The state of the economy at the street level

Funny you say this. I collect sneakers and the Adidas Yeezys have been the 'must haves' for the last few years. They retail at $340 and resale ranges from $400 up to $1200. People line up hours for them and they are sold out all the time. However, with the last two Yeezy releases, there has...

The state of the economy at the street level

Walking along Crown Street in Surry Hills/Darlinghurst this morning, I saw 7 empty stores within two blocks with a 'For Lease' sign on the window. I thought to myself, "so this is what a recession looks like".

The state of the economy at the street level

I was lining up at a shop for the Black Friday sale and got talking to the lady in front of me. Somehow we started talking about Afterpay, and she mentioned how her friend lost her job recently and owes $2000 on her Afterpay account.

The state of the economy at the street level

    China

Has anyone here heard of Guo Wengui? He makes some rather extraordinary claims about China and their economy. Just wondering if people here think there's any truth to it?

    PET - Phoslock Environmental Technologies

PET announced today that it has secured an initial $1.3m order for Florida Wetland and Lake Remediation projects. Although I think their main source of revenue will come from China, they are also trying their hand in the US. PET closed at $1.27 today.

The state of the economy at the street level

Went to Eastwood tonight to visit an elderly woman in her home business, and she told me that a lot of shops in that area were closing down. Afterwards I went to eat in the small Taiwan street food market and noticed only about half of the restaurants were open. I remember this was quite a...

    A2M - The A2 Milk Company

Very surprised with the drop today. I only had a quick look, but nothing negative stood out for me from the report. If I was brave I would have bought more today.
