National pride

if i gauge the feeling correctly, notwithstanding a few rednecks on this site, we as a nation may come of age on wednesday.

it takes a fair amount of moral courage to apologise for big mistakes, and moreso when that apology is on behalf of someone else.

many aussies simply arent aware of the truth behind all this and may think, 'why should i say sorry', and may feel nonplussed, detached, hostile, or oblivious to it all. in time, perhaps with an adjustment in the teaching of oz history, we will look back on 13 feb as a momentous day.

if we all embrace the sentiment behind the apology i for one will have a higher opinion of the strangers i pass every day, and have fair dinkum national pride.

for this i say 'thanks'.

There are many children of all races that should be taken away from their parents with no doubt in my mind. I have a friend that works for child services the stories are ordinary.

I understand why it was done, If it was right or wrong I can't judge that I was born many years after the event.

If Kev thinks it will heal things and not draw legal battles for $ to the courts as agro has already said, go right ahead.

correct. i would not be least surprised if this were to occur.
i think that's why the liberals held back from apologizing because they knew it would turn legal.

so much for tax cuts (inflation excuse), hospital spending and education, this will be gone within no time..

Well we give money to the wealthy to have babies and buy houses so a few quid to those who have been abused by governments is hardly worth worrying about. However I believe compensation is a case by case basis through the courts and doesn't involve what the government may or may not say. Whether they apologise or not legally everyone knows human rights abuses occured.

Regarding national pride for me got that back somewhat the day Howard got the push, he really turned many Australians into nasty self centred red necks.

you're kidding yourself arminius. this is a half-assed political stunt and any apology that takes 3 weeks to word is going to be slippery and duplicitous, so in the end it will mean nothing.

i'd be happy for a sincere, heartfelt and compensated apology to the aborigines IF it puts the issue to rest and end this "2 communities 1 nation" policy we are currently lumped with. good luck though, too many people are too comfortable with the status quo.

perhaps they should blurt out the first thing that comes to mind, but that could be slippery and meaningless.
once again for those who are hard of hearing. this apology wont solve everything, but it is a good first step.
we might discuss the ramifications as they happen eh.

Interesting too that the milky way becomes a "river passing through a celestial plain". (the ‘Wodliparri’ is a watercourse curving through ‘Womma’). So it turns out over the years we've been sending rockets from Woomera to Womma.

was watching the ladies talking to kerry obrien tonight about tomorrow am.
damn near bought a tear to my eye.
it matters not whether, or how much, the govt pays in reparations. they deserve it and the nation can afford it. (how much was going into the fishing hall of fame?)
yep. it started on election day, but tomorrow i will have so much more pride in my country.
sounds corny, but there it is.
