Most of us are reasonably happy to think of the appropriate portion of our tax dollars going to support our fellow citizens who are going through hard times. And mostly this assistance is properly directed and appreciated by the recipients.
But there are some out there who have no intention of ever getting a job or making any other sort of contribution to society. Not content with that miserable attitude, they also find ways to rip the system off. Here's an example:
Family consists of mum, dad and a four year old. None of them have ever worked. Dad comes in wanting rent in a caravan park. They had been in another caravan park where the rent was paid a week in advance. They decided they didn't like that place so, despite the rent being paid, they moved out and into a $130 per night holiday apartment. Stayed there until the money ran out (several days before next benefit was due) and then made their request for assistance in no. 2 caravan park.
His Centrelink referral showed that he was receiving the full Single Newstart (dole) payment. She the full Single Parenting Payment plus family tax payment plus rent assistance. When asked how long they had been living together he said two years. So they have been cheating the system for two years, spend their money irresponsibly, and then feel quite OK about just asking for more.
They didn't get it.
