If you read a few old papers then something you'll realise pretty quickly is that the past wasn't how it is often perceived.

Many of the debates of today were going on 50 or even 100 years ago in one way or another. I'm very sure that if you search through the Age (for example) between say 1920 and 1970 then you'll find plenty about jobs in the manufacturing industry, capitalism versus socialism, the limited supply of some natural resources and even a bit of concern for the environment. Meanwhile there were problems with trains, problems with unions, problems with this, that and something else that is still a problem today. Far less has changed over the years than is often perceived - many of these debates have always been around.

What has changed however is the detail and context. Eg in 1960 manufacturing was growing not shrinking, and was seen as essential for reasons of national security. Meanwhile sulphur dioxide, not carbon dioxide as is the case now, was the emission causing most concern from the burning of coal. The details change but many of the underlying themes are alarmingly similar to 50+ years ago despite all that has changed in the world over that time.
