I was listening to my wife and a colleague talking today. My wife had asked the colleague if she would like her to do x for her.
The reply was - Yeh yeh, no no no, that's fine.
I interpreted this as saying - Yes I recognize the particular task you are referring to is in need of doing, however I would prefer to complete the task myself a little later when I have time, but thank you very much for your kind offer.
Obviously my wife interpreted it similarly.
But this left me wondering what a foreigner might have made of that response. It also struck me that we have many such responses that on the face of it are simple gobbledygook, yet implicitly contain more complicated messages.
