I have been reading various reports that the Murray Darling basin is on its last legs. Large tracts of of the river as so degraded by lack of water that it is turning into sulfuric acid! Yet, in Victoria, the Brumby government keeps stalling efforts to save the river by buying back water allocations. Why? So he can protect an irrigation industry that should never have been located in a desert region in the first place.
Time for federalism I am afraid as the States have proven themselves to be short sighted and selfish.
We will lose this great Australian icon if we do not put pressure on our muddling state governments to act now and save the Murray.
What a disgrace!
