I'll open the thread with a look at Victorias chronic shortage of an effective rail network in particular. I'll let others find out and post about what they think of their states networks.
I found this attached map particularly telling... it shows the massive operating rail network Victoria had built up by 1980 (and most of which was still operational, though declining in standard into the 90's through lack of political will and the strength of the road transport lobby).
I've overlaid the totally pathetic V-Line rail network that remains today. All the rail links seen in the 1980 map that are no longer marked in red are now covered by inefficient bus transfers. Boy, I bet the current Government wishes the rail network hadn't been de-constructed as far as they did - especially since the future now appears to impose ever increasing road transport costs due to rising oil & diesel prices.
