Ban bottled water

I might have this wrong, let me check.


I can buy Coke (or other liquid sugars)
I can buy chocolate or lollies (or solid sugars)
I can buy potato/corn chips (solid fat & salt)
I can buy cigarettes (cancer in a stick!)
If I go to the right shop I can buy as much alcohol as I want too.

Not that there is anything wrong with all that, its a free country.

But I can't buy water in a bottle?

And the NSW government ("NSW government" is a byword for "courageous decision takers" in this country, for any offshore readers..................not) have banned bottled water in government departments.

Is this a new standard of idiocy in this country?

Bottled water is great. Would I buy it? Hell no. However, most of the youngsters do; and certain brands of bottled water have now been labelled as 'cool'. This pleases me greatly, as it means that many young adults are now choosing a bottle of water, over a bottle of acidic, sugary cola.

Where is this going? A ban on bottled water. Great.
From my own perspective, I travel a lot, and in the summer when I want a cold drink, I prefer not to drink the liquid sugar stuff.
In a lot of places, the town water is so heavily laced with chlorine its undrinkable. And I'm not sure how many shops would appreciate people rocking up asking for cold water.
So for me bottled water is great, as I am sure it is for a lot of other people.
I dont get it. What is going on here?

I could "understand" a tax to make them carbon neutral -- but to outright BAN it!!!

Its not to difficult to have a bottle refund like they used to and what they have in Sth Aust.

with a 200 -300% mark up i reckon bottled water is just great

especially in a city full of eccy heads

perhaps the NSW guvvermint a bit concerned that there employees are replacing the water with vodka just to get themselves through the day

I think that all we need are bottles that can be reused.
Actually I reused bottles from bottled water and only bought new ones when got caught unprepared and did not have my own bottle.

I much preferred to buy water than sugar laden soft drinks.

Maybe soft drinks could be banned too?

The thing is, they're only banning it in government departments. Maybe they have filtered chilled water on tap in every government department? They're definitely in most that I've been to lately.

All polluting or otherwise environmentally damaging and we've heard plenty of objections to them over the years. But all are a lot more useful and actually necessary than bottled water.

I'm not in favour of a ban, but anyone who buys water in single use plastic bottles that have been road freighted couldn't be taken seriously if they objected to any of the above being built or operated. Even more ridiculous if they whinged about CO2 emissions - if we're going to cut them then something's got to go and bottled water would be a pretty obvious non-essential thing that could be cut out. Indeed those who purchase it are consciously paying extra in order to pollute, a rather absurd notion when you think about it.
