I'm new here, so hello to everyone. I'm experienced with charts and various software packages but I am interested in finding the best (and cheapest) way of getting live ASX data that will interface with MS Excel so I can use my own macros and displays. The key thing here is how I can link it to Excel. Any ideas?

I don't know if this is the right post to put this in but what I would like to know is:
Are there any programs out there or is there any way that "live market data" eg. share prices,volume,depth etc can be directly linked to Excel and therefore be manipulated in that program (I had used The Bourse software and was able to copy and paste data to excel but there was no way to get this information to auto update inself). Help would be appreciated.

I use a DDE link from sanford securities (http://www.sanford.com.au) to update all my excel spreadsheets. When you open your file it asks if you want to update yes/no.
The only problem is that you pay $77/month for sanford pro + $35/month for the DDE link, & you can't have the DDE link without the other, but if you do lots of spreadsheets with large amounts of updating to do, it only takes seconds instead of hours.....for me it is worth it.

I use webtrader software specifically for writing my own programs for intra day trading but find now that as i am approaching the completion of my objective, with the amount of programming involved ,updating is not 100%. I am considering sanfords excel link but need to subscibe just to try. can any one tell me who is using this if they have found any restrictive problems in the link data flow when using a large watchlist and many parameters to monitor? the system being used is active x.

For your own purposes (putting something out there for people to use is likely illegal), its quite easy in perl, visual basic or c# to screen scrape what you need from a variety of websites into MSAccess
Basically your program connects to the site, grabs the HTML and then parses it for what you want out of the HTML and save it into MSAccess
From there, linking to excel is a snap..
If your not a programmer, obviously you have a problem.. if you are interested in learning programming, its your first project.. :-)

Thanks for your replies, i am not interested in setting up a link from free data , i currently subscribe to webtrader which has a complete package of asx live data streaming into excel. all you have to do is write in vb the code according to your indicator needs. i am looking for an already set up system for which i am prepared to pay for provided it is faster in the linking system. all you have to do is write code which is not all that difficult when you subscribe to 'experts exchange' . the sanford set up looks appealing and i was wondering if anyone has been down this path.

Webtrade has very reliable live data in a spreadsheet
format, complete with BIG and simple, but very clear charts.
Static data can be imported and exported so no doubt,
there's a way to hook into their dynamic system, which
also includes a handy "ticker tape", as well.

Your own filters can be punched into Webtrader for
trading equities, options and warrants ... long or short.
At $82.50/month for unlimited access, Webtrader would

have been using webiress dde thru mf global for 7 years and the iress platform has been very reliable. fp markets and commsec provide webiress but i am looking at IB now that mf global has folded.....ie low commissions on futures and limit orders / traded orders can be transported live into excel...something you cant do with webiress however netiress can do this for $800/mth but not willing to pay this...depends really what you are trying to achieve . as a robot trader you need to have confirmation of trades in spread sheet but i can only continue my work when i get some money back from mf debacle.

im using desktop iress - very easy to use buy quite expensive. Check out ADVFN, they did good dde's for a few o/s stocks, haven't used them for AU though.

I have used the platform for a month and they do have a DDE set up. I am fairly sure there is no backfill with DDE as is the case of DDE from MetaTrader to Amibroker. Although I don't see the point of paying for the platform to get O,H,L,C,V. Very few real time only data vendors .
